COMPLICATIONS OF ANGIOGRAPHY
 ANGIOGRAPHY is an imaging technique
used to visualize the inside or lumen of
blood vessels, done by injecting a radio-
opaque contrast agent into blood vessel.
Origin of word ANGIOGRAPH:

 The word comes from the

Greek words:
Angeion means “vessel”
Graphein means “to write”
or “record”.

 The film or image of a blood

vessels is called an
angiograph or an
angiogram.
History of Angiography:

 1927_ first cerebral angiography

 1929_ first aortogram

 1932_ first pulmonary angiogram

 1948_ first cavogram

 1953_ first time Seldinger technique was used and radial

artery was cannulated to perform coronary angiogram.
Seldinger Technique:

 A procedure to

obtain safe access to

blood vessels during

angiography.
Equipment:

 Seldinger needle

 Guide wire

 Dilator

 Sheath/ Catheter
Seldinger Procedure:
Technique of Angiography:

 Access to blood vessel

(femoral artery most
common)
 Injection of contrast
agent.
 X-ray images are taken
either still or motion
images.
ANGIOGRAPHIC MODALITIES:

 C.T. angiography (CTA)

 M.R. angiography (MRA)

 Digital subtraction angiography (DSA)

C.T. ANGIOGRAPHY:

Combines conventional CT scan

with traditional angiography to
create detail images of blood
vessels in the body to diagnose
different conditions like stenosis,
aneurysms, vessel dissection.

CTA demonstrating aortic dissection

C.T. Angiogram demonstrating
Middle Cerebral artery occlusion
M.R. ANGIOGRAPHY:

 A group of techniques based

on MRI to image blood vessels.

 Arteries and veins are imaged

on the basis of flow effects or
contrast (inherent or
pharmacologically generated).
M.R.A. of circle of Willis
DIGITAL SUBTRACTION
ANGIOGRAPHY:

 Is a fluoroscopy technique
used in radiology to visualize
blood vessels.

 Images are produced using

contrast medium by
subtracting a “pre contrast
image” from subsequent post
contrast images.
DSA OF ICA
D.S.A.
INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY:

 A subspecialty of
radiology utilizing
minimally invasive image
guided procedures to
diagnose & treat diseases
in nearly every organ
system.
DIADNOSTIC ANGIOGRAPHY:
Used to examine blood vessels in:
 Brain
 Neck
 Heart
 Pulmonary vessels
 Abdomen (kidney & liver)
 Pelvis
 Upper & lower limbs
VASCULAR INTERVENTIONS:

 NEUROVASCULAR interventions:

 Cerebral aneurysms coil embolisation

 Lumen restoration balloon dilation, thrombolytic
drugs
 AVM & fistulas detachable balloons & coils,
embolization by particles
 Embolisation of vascular tumors by particles
 Stenting of carotid arteries
Diagrammatic demonstration of coiling
Curative embolisation of cerebral AVM
SOME OTHER COMMON INTRERVENTIONS:

 Ablative procedures for malignancies (chemoembolisation,

radioembolisation, radiofrequency ablation, cryoablation,
microwave ablation)

 Embolisation of GIT bleeding

 Embolisation of bronchial artery for hemoptysis

 Embolisation of Splenic and renal artery

ANGIOGRAPHY MACHINE:
INTRVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY VS CONVENTIONAL
SURGERY:
 Incomparison to surgery interventional
radiology offers ;

 Less pain
 Less blood loss
 Low risk of infection
 Faster recovery time
LIMITATIONS OF ANGIOGRAPHY:

 Allergy to contrast media

 Renal failure
 Pregnancy

 Uncorrectable coagulopathy
 Inability to lie flat
 In short, angiography does not only have extremely
useful diagnostic value but it is offering new
horizons in treatment of various diseases with less
pain & saving precious time of patients.
