Abstract:
The utilization of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) has gained substantial attention in various fields,
ranging from electronics and optoelectronics to biomedical applications, owing to their
unique optical, electrical, and antimicrobial properties. However, the inherent susceptibility
of ZnO Nanoparticles to Photocorrosion poses a significant challenge to their long-term
stability and functionality. This review paper provides a comprehensive analysis of recent
advancements in the synthesis of ZnO Nanoparticles, focusing on innovative strategies to
prevent photocorrosion, such as hybridization, thermal annealing, and ZnO encapsulation. The
synthesis of ZnO Nanoparticles has witnessed notable progress in recent years, with various
methods being explored to control size, shape, and crystallinity. Precise control over these
parameters is crucial for tailoring the desired properties of ZnO Nanoparticles for specific
applications. Common synthesis techniques, including sol-gel, hydrothermal, and chemical
vapor deposition methods, are discussed in detail, highlighting their advantages and
limitations. Moreover, emerging methods such as green synthesis using plant extracts and
microorganisms are explored for their eco-friendly attributes. Photocorrosion, the degradation
of ZnO Nanoparticles under the influence of light, remains a critical impediment to their
practical applications. To address this challenge, hybridization strategies involving the
combination of ZnO with other materials such as polymers, carbon-based materials, and
metal oxides are investigated. These hybrid structures exhibit enhanced stability and
improved photocatalytic performance. The synergistic effects arising from the combination of
different materials contribute to the prevention of photocorrosion and the overall
enhancement of ZnO Nanoparticle properties. Thermal annealing has emerged as a promising
post-synthesis treatment for enhancing the crystallinity and structural stability of ZnO
Nanoparticles. The review examines the influence of annealing conditions, such as
temperature and duration, on the physicochemical properties of ZnO Nanoparticles. The
insights gained from various studies underscore the significance of thermal annealing in
mitigating photocorrosion and improving the overall performance of ZnO-based devices.
Furthermore, the incorporation of ZnO encapsulation techniques is explored as an effective
strategy to shield the Nanoparticles from external environmental factors. Different
encapsulation materials, including silica, polymers, and metal oxides, are evaluated for their
ability to provide a protective barrier, thereby enhancing the longevity and stability of ZnO
Nanoparticles in diverse applications.
