Passive Voice

Kalimat Passif adalah kalimat dimana subject dikenai tindakan/pekerjaan/perbuatan, . Berbeda dengan
kalimat aktif dimana subject-lah yang melakukan pekerjaan/perbuatan/tindaka.

Pola Umum:

Subject + to be + Verb 3 (past participle)

Secara umum kalimat pasif dibentuk oleh to be yang diikuti kata kerja berbentuk ketiga (ver-3). Perubahan
dari kalimat aktif menjadi passive tidak mengubah tense yang digunakan kalimat tersebut; dengan kata lain,
tense kalimat passive mengikuti pola pada kalimat aktifnya.

Terdapat beberapa hal yang harus dindahkan dalam mengubah pola aktif menjadi passive, antara lain:
 Subject pada kalimat passive berasal dari object kalimat active.
 ’be…ing’ dalam aktif menjadi ‘being’ dalam kalimat passive.
 Tense pada kalimat passive mengikuti bentuk kalimat aktifnya.
 Verb-3 (Past Participle) pada kalimat passive dibentuk oleh verb Pada kalimat aktifnya.
 Hanya kalimat transitif yang bisa dirubah kledalambentuk passive.
 Kalimat passive digunakan jika ingin menonjolkan hasil tindakan daripada pelaku tindakan tersebut.

1. Present simple

Active : My mother cooks the meal everyday. ( S + V1 + O )

Passive : The meal is cooked by my mother everyday ( S + is/am/are +Verb-3 )

Present continuous

Active : Rina is writing a letter. ( S + is/am/are +verb-ing )


Passive : A letter is being written by Rina. ( S + is/am/are +being + Verb-3 )

Simple Past tense

Active ; My brother bought new house yesterday. ( S + verb-2 + O )


Passive : New house was bought by my brother yesterday. ( S + was/were + Verb-3)

Simple Future

Active : My sister will buy a dictionary tomorrow. (S + will + Verb1 + O )


Passive : A dictionary will be bought by my sister tomorrow. ( S + will +be + verb-3 )

Present Perfect

Active : My sister has cooked rice. ( S + have/has + Verb-3 )

Passive : Rice has been cooked by my sister. ( S + have/has + been + Verb-3 )

Present perfect continuous

Active : My mother has been cooking the meal since I arrived. ( S+Have/has+been+V-ing)
Passive : The meal has been being cooked by my mother since I arrived. ( S+have/has+been+
being+verb-3)

Past continuous

Active : Ratu was writing a letter. ( S + was/were + verb-ing )


Passive : A letter was being written by Ratu ( S + was/were + being + verb-3 )
Past Future

Active : Ridwan would answer that question. ( S + would + verb1 + + O )


Passive : That question would be answered by Ratu. ( S + would +be + verb-3)

Past Perfect
Active : Suwarno had kicked the ball. ( S + had + verb-3)
Passive : The ball had been kicked by Suharno. ( S + had + been + Verb-3 )

Passive with Modals

Active ; We can solve the problem. Active : They may open the hotel next year.
Passive : The problem can be solved Passive : The hotel may be opened next year.
