NORMALIZED DIFFERENCE

VEGETATION INDEX (NDVI), 1994

The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is a widely used remote sensing
measurement that helps assess vegetation health and density from satellite or aerial
images. NDVI relies on the distinct way vegetation reflects light. Healthy, green
plants reflect more near-infrared (NIR) light and absorb more visible red light, while
sparse or stressed vegetation has a different reflection pattern. NDVI values are
calculated using the formula: NDVI = (NIR - Red) / (NIR + Red), where higher values
indicate denser, healthier vegetation, and lower values suggest sparse or degraded
vegetation. NDVI is particularly valuable for monitoring environmental changes,
agricultural planning, forestry, and land management, as it helps identify plant growth
trends, drought impacts, and crop productivity over time.

STEPS INVOLVED:
1. Download data from USGS Earth Explorer from Landsat 4 or 5 for 1994.
2. Go to Layers and then on Add Raster Layer. Add the bands.

3. Go to Raster and then click on Raster Calculator. Add command: (Band 4- Band
3)/ (Band 4+ Band 3). Now go to Output Layer, save in a folder and click OK.
4. Go to Raster, then Extraction, then add the Delhi shape file as the mask Layer to
do to clipping.
5. Go to properties, select Single Band Pseudocolour and change the colour ramp as
needed. Click apply and OK.
6. Make the Layout by adding all the map elements.

FINAL MAP:
ANALYSIS:
The vegetation cover in Delhi is concentrated in the northern and western parts of
the city. These areas are home to several protected forests such as the ridge forests
and Yamuna biodiversity park. Vegetation also includes agricultural lands.
The vegetation cover is classified into three Categories;
1- High vegetation cover- Areas with high vegetation cover are shown in dark red
cover on the map. These areas have NDVI of greater than 0.5.
2- Medium vegetation cover- Areas with medium vegetation cover shown with
shades of light-red. NDVI ranging between 0.2 and 0.5 are included within this.
3- Low vegetation cover- Areas with low vegetation cover have NDVI ranging
between 0.2 and less.
NDVI values ranging from 0 to -1 are generally waterbodies.
The highest vegetation cover is found in northern part of Delhi is the areas around
the ridge forest. Other green areas are found around Yamuna biodiversity park.
