Midnight Hotel written by Babafemi Osofisan, this play satirically depicts the
various social ills such as bad government and corruption,
it also explores societal issues such as poverty, corruption, and the clash between
morality and survival in a post-colonial Nigerian setting,
stating how these issues affects our society, both politically or economically,
right from the independent to post independent or to the present day. Femi osofisan
uses satire to produce comedy in the Midnight Hotel. The author have looked at what
goes on in the society as a source of motivation to come out with his comic play,
which makes the play a contemporary play, because, it deals with existed and still
existing problems in the society. Satire is one of the controlling elements in
Africa. They have ability to make hilarious mood out of serious situations to
provoke the audience and give them pleasure in the end.
The play however, is interspersed with songs and dialogues. [Note; this play is
not a full opera, when all the lines are sung...] The play either starts with a
commentary by the song master, or with dialogues and interaction among the actors
or with dances and music.
Midnight Hotel is a contemporary play set in an hotel room. The title of the
play is ironic and it the critical corruption in Nigeria, just like the song master
said in the welcoming song, "a house of sin amalgamated in nineteen hundred and
fourteenth with just three rooms at the beginning..." Each character symbolises
people in the society one way or the other, the playwright exposes basic vices
evident in each character such as, corruption, bribery, child abuse, favouritism,
misappropriation and promiscuity.
The play starts with Mrs Asibong, an honourable member of the parliament, she
unknowingly check into the same hotel she thought her would never come to, with
pastor suuru. She checks into the hotel with pastor suuru, under the act of
awarding him a contract so as to "sample" him. To her concern, the head master, who
is a friend to her husband and a father of three daughters, also checks into the
same hotel, into the same room Mr Asibong was checked in to by the other
receptionist.
This leads to series of hilarious events, where each character had their own fair
share of the comedy.

3) Directorial Approach.
Realism: Using realism as a directorial approach to stage Midnight Hotel involves
emphasizing the authenticity of its characters, setting, and social themes to
create an engaging and relatable experience for the audience. Realism as a
directorial approach for Midnight Hotel allows the audience to see themselves and
their society reflected on stage, by grounding the play’s humor, conflicts, and
critiques in authentic performances and design.

The play's themes of corruption, morality, and survival are highlighted through
believable dialogue and relatable conflicts. While balancing satire and realism, it
must also be ensure that the humor emphasizes rather than detracts from the social
commentary, creating a production that is both thought-provoking and grounded in
real-life experiences.
