1.1.
Description of the project:
The project “Electro-Harvester sentinel” aims to develop a monitoring, self-powered, fault-detecting system for power distribution networks – transmission lines-. The system will incorporate electromagnetic energy harvesting technology to effectively collect the existing ambient electromagnetic energy emanating from the high-voltage transmission lines and convert it into electrical energy to drive various sensors related to monitoring and fault-detecting system. This will, in turn, effectively avoid the need for any external power source or even battery replacement, hence facilitating long-term autonomous operation at lesser accessible locations and remote areas. The monitoring and fault-detector system consists of different type of special sensor such as: current, voltage, temperature, vibration, Environmental sensors (humidity and wind speed sensors) and insulation resistance, set at strategic positions in the transmission infrastructure. Every sensor will monitor certain parameters constantly; thus, they provide full details about the condition of the line during transmission. The Arduino will collect the signals from these sensors and further broadcast the real-time information to the central processing unit for analysis. The system operates so that it can easily identify overload conditions, overheating conditions, insulation deterioration, external conditions that may affect the performance or mechanical wear. The applied monitoring structure also integrates IoT capabilities, which can enable remote access and therefore the possibility of centrally tracking system health in real time via a user-friendly interface. In the energy-harvesting unit, energy will be captured from the existing electromagnetic fields around high voltage lines. That process is possible if the energy harvester were placed close enough to the transmission lines, whereby the electromagnetic fields created by the high-voltage currents will be absorbed then conditioned, stored, and used it to feed sensors and communication modules of both the monitoring system. Thus, this energy-harvesting-based approach would enable the system to operate for a long time, with no dependence on battery replacements or any other external power source. As for hardware implementation, Arduino shall be used as the interface for collecting data. It collects information from every sensor for its supply to a central processing unit. The collected data will be processed to identify any abnormalities or patterns associated with faults.
1.2. Objectives of the project:
The "Electro-Harvester Sentinel" will be an advanced energy-centered device for the transformation of high voltage transmission networks with a view to their reliability and efficiency. Relating to innovation in energy harvesting and fault detection, the key objectives are:
To develop an Autonomous Energy Harvesting Monitoring
System: The study of designing such an advanced self-sufficient system using the ambient electromagnetic energy generated by the transmission lines as a reliable source of power toward the continuous and untethered monitoring with no supplied power. To allow Real-time Monitoring of Energy Flow and Efficiency: The system will be equipped with sensors for the measurement of current and voltage at every essential energy parameter to provide the sensation in the power flow and efficiency continuously at any point in the transmission line. To improve the Reliability in Energy and Reduced Disruptions: the fault-detection system will be proposed to automate the identification of electrical abnormalities, insulation deterioration, and overload situations- all put together, making up a much safer and more reliable energy distribution network. To promote the Sustainable Energy Management in Grid Maintenance: Powered by electromagnetic energy harvested within sensors and other IoT components, the system will support sustainable operation and reduce the frequency of maintenance as well as prolong the lifecycle of the monitoring equipment.
1.3. Benefits and outcomes:
The Implementation of the "Electro-Harvester Sentinel" system will ensure considerable contributions towards power distribution networks with great implications for energy engineering practice. The foreseen outcomes of this work are: Enhanced Reliability: Through continuous monitoring of the critical parameters of the high-voltage transmission lines, the system makes the network for power distribution more reliable. It reduces failure and outage possibilities by early fault detection hence giving out a more stable energy supply. Improved Safety: The proactive fault detection work immensely to improve safety while giving enough time in advance to avoid disasters of any proportion. Early warnings will avoid accidents that may pose serious threats to infrastructures and citizens. Sustainability and Cost Savings: The device won't require battery replacements or any other power sourcing from the outside, hence is bound to be sustainable and reduce costs over time in all aspects: maintenance and operational costs. Support the integration of renewable Energy: Improvement in the reliability and performance of the power distribution systems under the project will go a long with integrating renewable energy sources into the grid. In fact, reliable monitoring and fault detection will be crucial in handling the variability associated with renewable energy generation. Smart Grid Technologies Development: The use of IoT capabilities with the integration of remote monitoring will contribute in developing smart grid technologies whereby communication and control across the energy distribution network will be enabled. Actually, such advancement could provide a way for more intelligent and responsive approaches to energy management systems.
