Cats, a musical comedy about cats.
The musical comedy Cats is set in London’s East End and follows the lives of a family
of cats as they try and start their own newspaper publishing company. The father cat,
Fredrico, had a lifelong dream of having his own newspaper called the Daily Meow.
Assisted by his lovely wife Tiffany, their daughters Lucinda and Geneveve and their
slightly crazy son Pannini, this family of felines sings and jokes their way into
everyone’s heart.
As you watch the play, you will hear such musical treasures as “Baby, Don’t Eat the
Green Salami,” “The Marmalade Cat Shuffle,” and the unforgettable, “I’m Not Crazy
—Just Misunderstood.”
Because this is a sold-out performance, all attendees are requested to arrive one hour
before the start of the show. Also, we ask that you do not bring any pet dogs or mice to
the show, as these animals will excite the actors.

The main arrival/departure points for flights in Germany are Frankfurt-am-Main,
Munich and Dusseldorf. Frankfurt is Europe's busiest airport after Heathrow. An
airport departure tax is included in ticket prices. Thanks to the spread of low-cost
airlines, it is now often cheaper to fly to Germany from around Europe than to take the
train. While train travel is often more expensive than catching a bus, it's generally
faster, more comfortable particularly for overnight travel and more efficient. Germany
is served by an excellent high-way system connected to the rest of Western Europe.
Roads from Eastern Europe are being upgraded, but some border crossings are a little
slow, especially from Poland. To enter Germany with a car or motorbike, you must
have third-party insurance. Ferries run between Germany's northern coast and
Scandinavia and the UK.
1. Why should Alexis go on the internet?
A. to email Jessie

FREELANCE BENEFITS AND DRAWBACKS
Freelancers generally enjoy a greater variety of assignments than in regular
employment, and almost always have more freedom to choose their work schedule.
The experience also allows the opportunity to build up a portfolio of work and
cultivate a network of clients in hopes of obtaining a permanent position.
A major drawback is the uncertainty of work - and thus income - and lack of company
benefits such as health insurance or retirement pay.
Another drawback is that freelancers often must handle contracts, legal issues,
accounting, marketing, and other business functions by themselves. If they do choose
to pay for professional services, they can sometimes turn into significant out-of-pocket
expenses. Working hours can extend beyond the standard working day and working
week.
1. What does freelancing afford?
A. Regular employment
B. An assortment of projects
C. Freedom to refuse a permanent position
D. Opportunities to employ clients
2. What could possibly be a negative aspect of freelance work?
A. An unimpressive portfolio
B. A rigorous schedule
C. A possibility of not earning enough money
D. Working a minimal amount of hours
3. If freelancers decide they need somebody to help them,
A. they won't be able to make any money.
B. they will have the same advantages as if they own a company.
C. the quality of their work will be affected.
D. their clients won't be pleased.
4. What is the purpose of the leaflet?
A. To balance the pros and cons of freelance work
B. To encourage professionals to freelance
C. To show how the negatives outweigh the positives in freelancing
D. To give a detailed definition of freelance work

What do students consider to be “art”? According to the World Arts Council, most
students who were asked this question considered art to be painting. Almost seventy
percent of students age 15 through 18 said that painting was art. This takes into
account all manner of painting from watercolor to pastels, oils, and acrylics. A much
smaller number, twenty percent, said that sculpture was art. This number includes
students who said that sculpture included wood and clay. Eight percent said that stone
sculpture was art. Only two percent of the students surveyed thought that working with
wood was art. “I think that paintings are artistic,” one student said, “but sculpture
isn’t”. According to Liza Metter, art director at Bandas University, students tend to
associate art with color; things that lack color aren’t considered art. This research will
be used in the future to help better develop high school and university art curriculums.

Newspaper clipping
A local high-school teacher communicates with blind students via sculpture. Matt
Creaborne, an art teacher at Crestview High-School, recently began using sculpture to
assist blind students with such subjects as math and geometry. He got the idea by
watching the great Spanish sculptor Rigo Rossi use his hands to count off
measurements as he sculpted. “By using their hands, students can feel things like
distances and spatial relationships,” Mr. Creaborne said. “This allows them to think
abstractly, just like in geometry.” Mr. Creaborne’s technique will be tried in several
other schools this fall including three high schools for blind learners. According to Jim
Miller, director for assisted student learning, Mr. Creaborne’s methods should help
visually impaired students match non-visually impaired students in terms of their test
scores in mathematics. “We are looking forward to big improvements in test scores in
the next few years,” Mr. Miller said.
1. What was the age range of the students interviewed?
A. 10 – 14 B. 14 – 16 C. 15 – 18 D. 15 – 20
2. According to one art director, what do students associate art with?
A. Color B. Shape C. Size D. Popularity
3. What is the least likely to be considered art?
A. Painting B. Clay sculpture C. Stone sculpture D.
Woodworking
4. According to the newspaper clipping, which students are Mr. Creaborne’s
classes for?
A. Students who cannot see
B. Students who cannot hear
C. Students who cannot taste
D. Students who cannot feel
5. According to the newspaper clipping, what benefit will Mr. Creaborne’s
technique have on the students?
A. Test scores will go up.
B. Test scores will go down.
C. Test scores will stay the same.
D. The article does not say.

Debbie's Restaurant
5243 Milford Drive
Westmere. TX 44770
Seminole Recreation Supply, Inc.
Western Avenue Suite 2B
Colony Business Park
Houston, TX 45684
Dear Debbie's Manager:
Generally, when I find myself sitting down to write a letter to a business, it is to
complain about a poor product or service. This time, however, I have the pleasure of
writing to commend all those at your restaurant for a job well done.
Last Wednesday evening, I was suddenly asked by my company to treat a group of
prospective clients to dinner. Though I had never eaten at Debbie's before, I had
always heard good things about your restaurant, and thus decided to give it a try. To
my pleasant surprise, everything I had heard was true. The food was excellent and
reasonably priced, and the service was prompt and impeccably polite. I was
particularly impressed with the patience and friendliness shown by one waitress- Julie,
I believe her name was. My guests were seven business people from Asia making their
first trip to our country. As it was their first time in an American restaurant, they
required some extra time and assistance to make their meal selections. Julie was very
pleasant and helpful, carefully explaining the items on the menu and making
appropriate suggestions.
So, thank you for a very pleasant dining experience. I will certainly be bringing
future clients to your establishment.
Sincerely,
Rodrigo C. Mendez

Drilling to Success
A company to watch in the coming year
Ever on the lookout for up-and-coming companies to recommend to investors, this
month we focus on KYO Offshore Drilling. KYO Offshore Drilling, Inc. provides
contract drilling services for offshore oil and gas wells primarily in the Gulf of
Mexico, North Sea, Persian Gulf, and off the coasts of Brazil and Egypt. KYO's niche
is deep-water and hazardous environment drilling. This is an area with great potential
for strong growth. World oil demand continues to rise, and easier-to-access oil has
already been tapped. Despite recent news of additional supplies from Iran or Iraq,
there have been no results. Because KYO deals in a difficult environment, its prices
are higher than other drilling companies. However, it also enjoys high profit margins:
18% last year, and a projected 22% for this year. KYO has merger plans with Sub
Ocean Enterprises, Finland's largest drilling company, with KYO projected to gain
control of all Sub Ocean Enterprises operations later this year. This would double
KYO's rigs and make an already strong company far more powerful. Shareholders in
KYO have already seen their investments increase by 15% over the last eight months,
and if KYO goes ahead with the merger plans, they can expect even greater profits.
KYO has over 1,500 employees in ten different countries. It is known as an equal
opportunity employer, with 25% of top management positions held by women. It is
also noted for its progressive efforts to align its management practices to those of the
local culture.
1. What is KYO's specialty?
A. Brazilian and Egyptian oil
B. Drilling for oil or gas that is easy to find
C. Drilling for oil deep below the ocean
D. Competing with Middle-Eastern oil companies from Iran and Iraq
2. Who would probably be interested in reading this report?
A. An office manager
B. An electrical goods store owner
C. A gas station attendant
D. A stock market investor
3. What is KYO expected to do this year?
A. Take over a Finnish drilling company
B. Move to Iran
C. Take on 25% more staff
D. Alter its management practices
4. What distinguishes KYO from other oil drilling companies?
A. Working in many different foreign countries
B. Taking on more difficult drilling jobs
C. Merging with a foreign company to expand operations
D. Taking advantage of the worldwide demand for oil

Message:
Please review the attached nomination form for our department’s nominee for this
year’s award. Anezka Novotna is my best staff member and is truly deserving of this
honor. I am going to Switzerland next week on business and won’t return until
December 13. I will be checking my e-mail regularly while I’m gone, so please e-mail
me if you have any questions about this nominee.
