answer to each of the questions.
Your mind’s ability to bring back experiences you have had is your memory. There
are two kinds of remembering, recall and recognition. For instance, you may not be able
to recall the poem you read yesterday, but if you see it again, you will know it instantly
because you recognize it.
Some few people have “total recall”, often spoken of as photographic memory. A
person with total recall can recite a whole page of a book he has read only once. This is
very unusual, however, and most people have difficulty in remembering even the names
they heard the day before. This is not because most people have a lack of the ability to
remember, but because they had not paid much attention to what they heard. They felt no
personal reasons to remember. Having a personal reason for remembering is one of the
most important factors in a good memory.
When you have a strong reason for remembering, concentrate as you read or listen,
and try to connect the new information to things you already know. A detail is easy to
remember when it fits into a whole that makes sense. If you understand the entire history
lesson before you try to remember particular dates, your memory may surprise you.

One of the most urgent environmental problems in the world today is the shortage of
clean water.Having clean drinking water is a basic human right. However, acid rain,
industrial pollution and garbage have made many sources of water undrinkable. Lakes,
reservoirs and even entire seas have become vast pools of poison. Lake Baikal in Russia
is one of the largest

lakes in the world. It contains a rich variety of animals and plants, including 1, 300 rare
species that do not exist anywhere else in the world. Yet, they are being destroyed by the
massive volumes of industrial effluent which pour into the lake every day. Even though
laws have been made, the government do not have the power to enforce them. Most
industries simply ignore the regulations. The Mediterranean Sea occupies 1% of the
world's water surface, but it is the dumping ground for 50% of all marine pollution.
Almost 16 countries regularly throw industrial wastes a few miles off shore.
Water is free to everyone. A few years ago people thought that the supply of clean water
in the world was limitless. Today, many water supplies have been ruined by pollution and
sewage. Clean water is now scarce, and we are at last beginning to respect this precious
source. We should do something now.

Desert tundra, or cold desert, occurs on the Arctic edges of North America,
Europe, and Asia. The word tundra comes from a Finnish word tunturia, which means
barren land. In the desert tundra, the temperatures are almost always freezing, and they
cause an environment in which plant life is virtually impossible. Plant life is made
impossible by two different extreme conditions, either a lack or an overabundance of
water.
During at least three quarters of the year, the Arctic is frozen. The Arctic is far
from the equator. This means the sunlight reaching the soil contains less energy than at
the equator. The existence of ice rather than water for the majority of the year means that
vegetation does not have enough moisture for growth to take place.
During the period of time when the temperature increases enough for ice to melt,
there is generally a large volume of water. Too much water and not enough drainage
through the frozen subsoil make it difficult for plants to grow. Despite this, about 1,700
kinds of plants grow on tundra, including reindeer mosses, liverworts, and grasses. The
400 varieties of flowers found add a wide range of colors.

A. There is too much water. B. The ice melts.
