spectrum? [2]

(b) State two advantages of an electromagnet over a permanent magnet. [2]

(b) Why are infrared radiations used for signalling during a war? [2]

(c) During sunset and sunrise, the sun is seen even when it is slightly below the
horizon. Explain why. [2]

(d) An electron beam is moving vertically upwards. It passes through a magnetic

field, extending from south to north in a horizontal plane. In which direction will the
beam be deflected? [2]

(e) A certain quantity of ice at –10°C is heated till it changes into steam at 100°C.
Draw a graph, showing temperature versus time, to represent the process. [2]

SECTION B (40 marks)

Answer any four questions.

Question No 5

(a) (i) What is a solenoid?

+ 31n0 + 186 MeV. [3]
*
(c) A concave lens has a focal length of 20 cm. At what distance from the lens should
a 5 cm tall object be placed so that it forms an image at a distance of 15 cm from
the lens? Also calculate the size of the image formed. [4]
(3)

Question No 6

(a) State three factors on which the natural frequency of vibration of a stretched string
depends. [3]

(b) Compare α, β and γ radiations in terms of any three of their properties. [3]
