OBADIAH HOLMES TESTIMONY “As with roses!”
NARRATOR: This story sounds like it came from some authoritarian state—Russia
perhaps, North Korea, or China; but it didn’t. It happened here, in Boston common,
to a Baptist preacher named Obadiah Holmes on September 6, 1651, for preaching
without a license from the state government. Holmes, like many others in that day,
were routinely persecuted for their religious beliefs. The laws of his day had no
guarantees for personal freedoms.
So what changed? What made our country the freest, most prosperous nation in the
world? We’re going to take a look through the eyes of a few of our forefathers as we
celebrate this wonderful country we call AMERICA!
SONG: “America The Beautiful”

(“My Country Tis of Thee” plays softly in background)

NARRATOR: Our first stop is in 1768, over a hundred years after Obadiah Holmes’
courageous stand. In a courthouse in Spotsylvania, VA, the great patriot Patrick
Henry has just rode 50 miles to defend a group of Baptist preachers who were again
locked up in jail for preaching without the government’s permission. He snatched up
the paper of indictment and began to speak:
PATRICK HENRY SPEECH
SONG: “My Country Tis Of Thee”
(“Always Been The Soldier” begins playing softly in the background)
NARRATOR: “Let freedom ring” was the rallying cry. This new nation, celebrating its
248th year tomorrow, truly believed in “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”
But there is always a high price for liberty, and as long as there have been enemies
of freedom, there have been men and women who will stand up and fight for it.
Abraham Lincoln, our 16th President, spoke of these sacrifices in the midst of one of
the most tragic wars in our history, at the site of one of it’s most famous sites:
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. On November 19, 1863, the great leader made one of the
finest speeches ever delivered:
ABRAHAM LINCOLN: GETTYSBURG ADDRESS
SONG: “Always Been The Soldier”

(“God Bless America” plays softly)

(BETSY ROSS comes to the chair, begins sewing the flag)
NARRATOR: Part of America’s greatness also can be found in her unity. It’s easy to
get caught up in the tribalism of our day, but the truth is that despite our
differences, our squabbles, and our frustrations with each other—we’re still
Americans. Like strands in a fabric, we come from all different customs and walks of
life, unified in our love for this great land. Johnny Cash wrote about that unity in his
poem written in 1974:
BETSY CONTINUES SEWING DURING “THAT RAGGED OLD FLAG”. (POSSIBLY STANDS
DURING LAST STANZA, HOLDS IT UP FOR LAST LINE
SONG: (Instrumental or Choir) “God Bless America” (Chorus)

(“Under God” begins playing softly)

NARRATOR: Liberty, sacrifice, unity—as important as all these are, they are not the
most important element of America’s greatness. In 1789, Our first President, George
Washington made a proclamation to the new nation confirming what was to be a
founding principle for years to come: a thankfulness, humility, and reliance on the
mercies of Almighty God:
GEORGE WASHINGTON SPEECH
SONG: “Under God”
