IV. TEACHING AND LEARNING PROCEDURES

Before/Pre-Lesson Proper

Activating Prior Good morning/afternoon, class! Are you excited for our National Mathematics Program class today?
Knowledge
(5 minutes)
In our regular math class as well as in our NMP class in the past 3 days you had learned how to add integers
using concrete & pictorial models. From these activities you were able to come up with the rules on how to add

1
LESSON SCRIPT IN MATHEMATICS 7

integers written as numerals. Today, I will help you deepen your skills in adding integers.

So that you will be able to accomplish efficiently the tasks which I will give to you later, as usual, I will group you
into three. Group 1 will occupy the first 2 rows, group 2 will occupy the next 2 rows and group 3 will occupy the
remaining rows of seats. The following students will be in Group 1 today. (Announce the members of the group by stating
their first names) For Group 2, the following students will be the members. (Announce also the members of the group). The
rest of the students who were not mentioned will be in Group 3.

To refresh your memory, I would like you to answer very quickly the exercise shown in the screen/board. Just
write the answer in your notebook.

Exercise 1

Perform the indicated operation.

1) 18 + 7
2) (-9) + (-11)
3) 6 + (-16)
4) 25 + (-10)

(After 2 minutes, process the learner’s answers and give appropriate feedback.)

Say: “let us see if you got them right.”

Lesson
Purpose/Intention
As I had always emphasized to you in the past three days class, your mastery in addition of integers is a requisite
to the next lesson which is subtraction of integers. Subtraction of integers becomes a very easy task for you if you

will have a mastery in addition.

(1 minute)

As we proceed, let us remember the following very important terms. Read it altogether. Ready, start.

Lesson Language
 ALGEBRAIC SIGN – the sign of the integer, it may be positive (+) or negative (-)
Practice  LIKE SIGNS – usually referring to 2 or more numbers with THE SAME ALGEBRAIC SIGN. Example; we say
(1 minute) that 8 & 15 have LIKE SIGN or we also say that (-7) & (-11) have like sign
 UNLIKE SIGNS - usually referring to 2 or more numbers with DIFFERENT ALGEBRAIC SIGN. Example; we
say that (-8) & 15 have like UNLIKE SIGN or we also say that (7) & (-11) have UNLIKE SIGN.
 ABSOLUTE VALUE – referring to the VALUE of the number REGARDLESS of its algebraic sign

Reading the Key

Idea/Stem
From our discussions in our regular math class, we were able to determine or derived the following rules:
(3 minutes)
 Rule in adding integer WITH LIKE SIGN

When adding integers WITH LIKE SIGN, we add the absolute value of the numbers and we copy the
common sign.

 Rule in adding integer WITH UNLIKE SIGN

When adding integers WITH UNLIKE SIGN, we find the difference of the absolute value of the numbers and
we copy the sign of the number with a greater absolute value.

Let us be clarified with the rule by answering the questions shown in the screen/board.

Given: (-8) + (-9)

3
LESSON SCRIPT IN MATHEMATICS 7

Questions:

1) Do the given integers have like or unlike signs? (Expected correct response: the integers have like signs)
2) What is the common sign? (Expected correct response: negative)
3) What rule should we use to find the sum? (Expected correct response: Rule in adding integers with
like signs)
4) Applying the rule, what must be the sum? (Expected correct response: -17)

Let us have another example.

Given: (15) + (-5)

Questions:

1) Do the given integers have like or unlike signs? (Expected correct response: the integers have unlike
signs)
2) What is the sign of the number with a greater absolute value? (Expected correct response: positive)
3) What rule should we use to find the sum? (Expected correct response: Rule in adding integers with
unlike signs)
4) Applying the rule, what must be the sum? (Expected correct response: 10)

Very good! You have now shown a clear understanding of the rule and you are now ready to do the tasks which I
had prepared for you.

Developing I will now provide you with a worksheet and I will give you 5 minutes to work on it.
