MATHEMATICS-CBSE

2 MARKS:
1. The length of a string between a kite and a point on the ground is
40 metres. If the string makes an angle with the ground level such
that tan slack in the string. 15 8 how high is the kite "Assume that
there is no slack in the string
2. If a man standing on a platform 3 metres above the surface of a
lake observes a cloud and fis reflection in the lake, then the angle of
elevation of the cloud is equal to the angle of depression of its
reflection. Justify your answer.
3. The angle of elevation of the top of a tower is 30°. If the height of
the tower is doubied, then the angleof elevation of its top will also
be doubled. Justify your answer.
4.If the height of a tower and the distance of the point of
observation from its foot, both, are increased by 10%, then the
angle of elevation of its top remains unchanged. Justify your
answer.
5. If the length of the shadow of a tower is increasing, then the
angle of elevation of the sun is also increasing. Justify your answer.

3 MARKS:
1. From a point on a bridge across a river, the angles of depression
of the banks on opposite sides of the river are 30° and 45°
respectively. If the bridge is at a height of 3m from the banks, find
the width of the-river. (Use √3=1.73)
2. The shadow of a tower standing on a level ground is found to be
40 m longer when the Sun's altitude is 30° than when it was 60°.
Find the height of the tower.
3. The angle of elevation of an aeroplane from a point A on the
ground is 60°. After a flight of 15seconds, the angle of elevation
changes to 30°. If the aeroplane is flying at a constant height of
1500√3 m, find the speed of the plane in km/hr.
4. A person standing on the bank of a river observes that the angle
of elevation of the top of a tree standing on the opposite bank is
60°. When he moves 30 metres away from the bank, he finds the
angle of elevation to be 30°. Find the height of the tree and the
width of the river.
5. The angle of elevation of the top of a tower from certain point is
30° If the observer moves 30 meters towards the tower, the angle of
elevation of the top increases by 15°. the height of the tower.
(Use√3=1.732)

5 MARKS:
1. From the top of a building 60 m high, the angles of depression of
the top and bottom of the vertical lamp post are observed to be 30°
and 60° respectively.
i) Find the horizontal distance between the building and the lamp
post.
ⅱ) Find the distance between the tops of the building and the lamp
post
2. The angle of elevation of a helicopter in air from a point A on the
ground is 45°. After a flight of 25 seconds, the angle of elevation
changes to 30°. If the helicopter is flying at a constant height of
2500 m, find the speed of the helicopter. (Use √3= 1.73)
3. A man standing on the deck of a ship, which is 10 m above water
level, observes the angle of elevation of the top of a hill as 60° and
the angle of depression of the base of the hill as 30°. Find the
distance of the hill from the ship and the height of the hill. (Take
√3=1.73)
4. The angle of elevation of an aircraft from a point A on the
ground is 60°. After a flight of 30 seconds, the angle of elevation
changes to 30°. The aircraft is flying at a constant height of 3500√3
m at a uniform speed. Find the speed of the aircraft.
5. A spherical balloon of radius r subtends an angle of 60° at the eye
of an observer. If the angle of elevation of its centre is 45° from the
same point, then prove that height of the centre of the balloon is √2
times its radius.
6. One observer estimates the angle of elevation to the basket of a
hot air balloon to be 60°, while another observer 100 m away
estimates the angle of elevation to be 30°. Find:
i) The height of the basket from the ground.
ii) The distance of the basket from the first observer's eye.
iii) The horizontal distance of the second observer from the basket.
7. A man observes a car from the top of a tower, which is moving
towards the tower with a uniform speed. If the angle of depression
of the car changes from 30° to 45° in 12 minutes, find the time
taken by the car now to reach the tower.
8. From a point on the ground, the angle of elevation of the top of a
tower is observed to be 60°. From a point 40 m vertically above the
first point of observation, the angle of elevation of the top of the
tower is 30°. Find the height of the tower and its horizontal
distance from the point of observation.

building from the top of multi-storeyed building are 30° and 45°
respectively. Find the height of the multi-storeyed building and the
distance between the two buildings.
4. From a point P on the ground, the angle of elevation of the top of
a 15m tall building is 30°. A flag is hoisted at the top of the building
and the angle of elevation of the top of the flagstaff from P is 45°.
Find the length of the flagstaff and the distance of the building

5. From a window 15 metres high above the ground in a street, the
angles of elevation and depression of the top and the foot of
another house on the opposite side of the street are 30° and 45°

Find the angle of elevation of the top of the tower from his eye.
3. A kite is flying at a height of 60 m above the ground. The string
attached to the kite is temporarily tied to a point on the ground.
The inclination of the string with the ground is 60°. Find the length
of the string assuming that there is no slack in the string. [Take √3 =
1.732]
4. The shadow of a tower, when the angle of elevation of the sun is
45°, is found to be 10m longer than when it was 60°. Find the height

elevation of the top of the pole observed from a point A on the
ground in 60° and the angle of depression of the point A from the
top of the tower is 45°. Find the height of the tower.
4. The angle of elevation of a top of a hill at the foot of the tower is
60° and the angle of elevation of the top of the tower from the foot
of the hill is 30°. If the height of the tower is 40m, then find the
height of the hill.
