From the PPSTs, the Southeast Asia Teachers Competency Standards and the TEDx videos that you
viewed, what competencies does a great teachers possess?
Great teachers possess a diverse set of competencies crucial for effective teaching and fostering a
positive learning atmosphere. They exhibit a profound understanding of their subjects, enabling them to
convey complex ideas clearly and engage students effectively. Skilled in various teaching methods, they
adapt their approach to cater to diverse learning needs. Exceptional classroom management skills create
an environment where students are engaged and focused. Excellent communication, both in explaining
concepts and actively listening to students, is their hallmark. They differentiate instruction to
accommodate varied learning styles and provide timely, constructive feedback. Culturally sensitive, they
embrace diversity, ensuring an inclusive classroom for all. Lifelong learners, great teachers continuously
enhance their knowledge and teaching techniques. Collaborative with colleagues and communities, they
support student learning and well-being. Upholding high ethical standards, they demonstrate
professionalism, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to their students' growth and success.
No, these competencies are not limited to professional skills alone. While the competencies I mentioned
primarily focus on the professional aspects of teaching, effective teaching encompasses a broader range
of skills and qualities that go beyond the classroom. Great teachers also possess personal qualities,
social skills, and emotional intelligence that contribute significantly to their effectiveness in the
classroom and in their interactions with students, colleagues, and parents.
3. For a teacher to be great, is it enough to possess the professional competencies to plan a lesson,
execute a lesson plan, manage class, assess learning compute and report grades? Explain your answer.
Possessing professional competencies is essential, but not sufficient for a teacher to be great. While
lesson planning, execution, and assessment are vital, a great teacher goes beyond these skills. They
inspire and motivate students, create a supportive learning environment, and understand individual
student needs. Great teachers also continuously learn and adapt, fostering a lifelong passion for
teaching and learning. In essence, greatness in teaching stems from empathy, inspiration, and a
commitment to nurturing students both academically and personally.
4. For a teacher to be great, which is more important personal qualities or professional competencies?
Both personal qualities and professional competencies are crucial for a teacher to be great, but finding a
balance between the two is essential. Personal qualities such as empathy, patience, passion, and the
ability to connect with students on a human level create a positive and supportive learning
environment. These qualities can inspire students and foster a genuine love for learning. On the other
hand, professional competencies, including effective teaching methods, subject knowledge, and
classroom management skills, provide the structure and expertise necessary for quality education. The
ideal combination of personal qualities and professional competencies enables a teacher to not only
impart knowledge but also make a lasting, positive impact on their students' lives, creating a truly
exceptional learning experience.
5. Who are the teachers we remember most?
The teachers we remember most are the ones who go beyond the curriculum, inspiring us with their
passion and dedication. They create a nurturing environment where we feel valued, respected, and
motivated to learn. These memorable teachers connect with us on a personal level, understanding our
individual strengths and challenges. Through their guidance and encouragement, they instill confidence
and leave a lasting impact, shaping our love for learning and our view of the world.
