Question 1 (Total marks: 30 marks)

For the questions below, 𝜶 refers to the sum of the last non-zero digit of all group
members’ student ID. For example, 𝜶 = 𝟐𝟓 for group with student IDs of 1023456090,
1023456789, 1023456097.

(a) A 20-hp, 240V, (50 + 𝛼)A, 900rpm series DC motor has a field winding of 33 turns per pole.
Its armature resistance is 0.09Ω, and its field resistance is 0.06Ω. The magnetization curve
expressed in terms of magnetomotive force ℱ versus 𝐸𝐴 at 900rpm is given in Table 1.
Armature reaction and rotational losses are negligible in this machine.

Table 1

i. Draw the magnetization curve for the motor on a graph paper.

ii. From the graph, compute the motor’s torque, speed, and output power at 33, 67, 100,
and 133 percent of full-load armature current.
iii. Plot the terminal characteristic of this machine.
[14 marks]

(b) A 13.8-kV, 50-MVA, 0.9-power-factor-lagging, 60-Hz, four-pole Y-connected synchronous

generator has a synchronous reactance of 2.5Ω and an armature resistance of 0.2Ω. The field
circuit has a DC voltage of 120V, and the current of the field circuit 𝐼𝐹 is adjustable over the
range from 0 to 10A. The OCC of this generator is shown in Figure 1. The field current has
𝛼
been adjusted to the value of 4 A.
i. What will the terminal voltage of this generator be if it is connected to a ∆-connected
load with an impedance of 24∠25°.
ii. Sketch the phasor diagram of this generator.
iii. Determine the efficiency of the generator if it has friction and windage losses of 1MW,
and core losses of 1.5MW?
iv. Assume that another identical ∆-connected load is to be paralleled with the first one.
What is the new terminal voltage after the load has been added?
[10 marks]
(c) A three-phase, 60-Hz induction motor runs at 715 rpm at no load and at (700 − 𝛼) rpm at
full load.
i. How many poles does this motor have?
ii. What is the slip at rated load?
iii. What is the speed at one-quarter of the rated load?
iv. What is the rotor's electrical frequency at one-quarter of the rated load?

Question 2 (Total marks: 25 marks)

Various types of conventional and non-conventional power generating stations are constructed to
accommodate the increasing demand for electric power. In this assignment, you are required to
prepare a power point presentation comprising 20-30 slides, in order to discuss on the following
topics:

(a) Identify ONE non-renewable power generating station of your choice. Explain in detail the
following:
(i) Main components and operating principles;
(ii) How instantaneous balance between electricity demand and power generation is
maintained in the non-renewable power generating station;
(iii) Advantages and disadvantages; and
(iv) Impact on society and environment.
[10 marks]

(b) Choose ONE renewable power generating station of your choice. Explain in detail the
following:
(i) Main components and operating principles;
(ii) Current state-of-the-art technology advancement in the renewable power generating
station;
(iii) Advantages and disadvantages; and
(iv) Impact on society and environment.
[10 marks]

(c) You are required to give an oral presentation of the prepared slides. The quality of your
presentation will be assessed according to the following criteria:
(i) Overall structure and organization of the presentation content;
(ii) Spelling, grammar or typographical mistakes;
(iii) Creativity and attractiveness of your presentation slides, such as the use of illustrative
figures/images, and animation to support your presentation; and
(iv) Overall presentation skills.
