ACTIVITY SHEET #2: Search Engines


GEAR UP

After the learners have finished answering this activity sheet, they will be able to:
1. Identify the different types of an online search engines;
2. Differentiate the uses of an online search engines and,
3. Use online search engines to locate specific resources.

ENGAGE
An online search engine or web search engine is a specialized computer server that searches for the
information on the Web.

Online search engines are essential especially to researchers or to individuals who would like to get topics
or anything related to their queries. It makes it easier for people to get the relevant topics they need. There
are three common types of search engines.

A. General Search Engines - refer to wide-ranging search engines capable of searching millions
upon millions of sites for specific information.

Below are examples of General search Engine:

Million Short Yahoo! Search Yippy
MSN Yahoo Google

B. Metasearch Engines (MSE) – is an aggregator search which uses data from a set of search
engines to produce its own results from the internet, given a query from the user interface.

C. Specific Search Engines – as the name implies, is a much smaller and more specific type and is
designed more specifically for certain users’ needs such as periodical database on culture,
history, politics, and government which are usually accessed for research purposes. Sometimes, it
would require user enrolment or subscription to allow unlimited access.
