ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION

Faradays Laws, Lenz’s rule, expression for self-induction and mutual induction.
1. A plot of magnetic flux (ϕ ) versus current (I) is shown in the figure for two inductors A and B. Which of
the two has larger value of self inductance? (Delhi 2010) (A)

2. Predict the polarity of the capacitor when the two magnets are quickly moved in the directions
marked by arrows. (B is positive)

3. Predict the directions of induced currents in metal rings 1 and 2 lying in the same plane where
current I in the wire is decreasing steadily. (1 Anti clock wise, 2 Clock wise)

4. When primary coil P is moved towards secondary coil S (as shown in the figure) the
galvanometer shows momentary deflection. What can be done to have larger deflection in the
galvanometer with the same battery? State the related law.

Two identical loops, one of copper and the other of aluminum, are rotated with the same
angular speed in the same magnetic field. Compare (Cu has less resistivity than aluminum)
(i) the induced emf and (ii) the current produced in the two coils. Justify your answer.
(Induced EMF is same, Induced Current in Cu is more)
5. A rectangular loop and a circular loop are moving out of a uniform magnetic field to a field-
free region with a constant velocity ‘v’ as shown in the figure. Explain in which loop do you
expect the induced emf to be constant during the passage out of the field region. The magnetic
field is normal to the loops. ( Constant for rectangular loop)

6. A pair of adjacent coils has a mutual inductance of 2 H. If the current in one coil changes from 0 to 0.5
A in 100 ms, what is the change in flux and emf induced in other coil(1Wb, -10V)
7. A rectangular coil of N turns and area of cross-section A, is held in time varying magnetic field
B = B0 sinѡt, with the plane of the coil normal to the magnetic field. Deduce an expression for the emf
induced in the coil. (E=-NB0Aѡ cosѡt)
8. In the given figure which of the bulbs (B1 and B2 are similar) will lights up bright when switch S is
closed. Will the two bulbs will be equally bright after some time? (R and XL are equal)

9. A bar magnet M is dropped so that it falls vertically through coil C. The graph obtained for voltage
produced across coil vs time is shown
(i) Explain the shape of graph
(ii) Why the negative peak longer than the positive peak?

10. The magnetic flux passing perpendicular to the plane of a coil and directed into the paper is given by
Ø=5t2 + 6t + 2, find induced emf in the loop at t = 1s? (16 Volts)
11. When a current changes from 2A to 4A in 0.05 sec. in a coil, induced emf is 8 V. Find the self-
inductance of coil. (L = 0.2 H)
12. Figure shows two co axial solenoids each of length l the outer solenoid has an area of cross section A1
and number of turns per unit length and n1 the corresponding values for inner solenoid A2 and n2
write the expression for self-inductance L1 L2 of the two solenoids and their mutual inductance M and
show that M < √L1L2.

13. (a) A magnet falls from height “h” through a metal ring. Will the acceleration be equal to “g”
(b) What happens if the ring in the above case is cut so as not to form complete loop?
