Past Simple Speaking Activity: "Time Travel Tales"

Activity Name: Time Travel Tales

Level: A2 (Elementary)

Duration: 20-25 minutes

Objective:

 Practice using the past simple tense in a conversational setting.

 Improve speaking fluency by narrating past events (real or imaginary).

Activity Procedure

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

 Teacher Prompt:
o Start with an example to set the tone:
 “Yesterday, I traveled back in time to meet a dinosaur! I saw a huge T-
Rex, and guess what? It smiled at me! Then, I ran away and hid behind a
rock!”
 Write the verbs on the board: traveled, saw, smiled, ran, hid.
o Explain the task:
 Students will pretend they traveled back in time and share a story about
their "time travel adventure."

2. Pair Work: Story Creation (10 minutes)

 Step 1: Pair up the students.

 Step 2: Provide each pair with a "Time Travel Card" featuring a time period or event
(e.g., Ancient Egypt, the Jurassic Era, a medieval castle, a pirate ship, etc.).
 Step 3: Students work together to create a short story (3-4 sentences) about what
happened during their time travel adventure.
o Example prompts to guide them:
 Where did you go?
 What did you see?
 What funny or strange thing happened?
 What did you do after that?

3. Sharing & Speaking Practice (10 minutes)

 Step 1: Each pair tells their time travel story to the class.
 Step 2: Encourage the audience to ask follow-up questions using the past simple.
o Example:
 "What did you do when the T-Rex smiled at you?"
 "Did you find any treasure on the pirate ship?"

Teacher Notes

1. Before the Activity:

o Prepare "Time Travel Cards" (can be simple text or images). Some suggestions:
 The Jurassic Era (dinosaurs)
 A Medieval Castle (knights and dragons)
 The Future (robots and flying cars)
 A Pirate Ship (treasure hunting)
 The 1960s (hippies and rock music)
2. During the Activity:
o Monitor pairs as they brainstorm, ensuring they use the past simple correctly.
o Gently correct mistakes or encourage self-correction if you notice errors (e.g., “Is
it I go or I went?”).
3. For More Fun:
o Allow students to use props or act out parts of their story for extra engagement.
o Add humorous prompts to the cards to spark creativity (e.g., "You met a talking
dinosaur," or "A pirate gave you a banana instead of treasure").
4. Post-Activity Feedback:
o Praise creativity and correct any common mistakes you heard during the sharing.
o Highlight good examples of past simple usage (e.g., “I loved how you said, ‘We
found gold but lost it in the ocean!’”).

Extension/Homework

 Ask students to write a detailed version of their time travel story (5-6 sentences) for
homework, incorporating both regular and irregular verbs.

This activity will encourage creativity, build confidence in speaking, and ensure plenty of laughs
while practicing the past simple! 😊
