According to the CBSE curriculum, an invitation letter may
appear in the class 12 paper as part of formal letter writing.
Since an invitation letter can be either formal or informal,
students must adhere to the correct format to achieve full
marks. The letter should be within a 50-word limit, and 4
marks are awarded for this question. To maximize their score,
students should include all necessary information and
practice various examples of invitation letters.
What is an Invitation?
 Invitations are generally printed cards
through which we invite our guests on
some auspicious occasion like wedding,
birthday, wedding anniversary, house
warming, inauguration of a shop/factory
etc.

 Invitations are of two types:


1. Formal
2. Informal
FORMAL INVITATION
 Formal Invitations are formal letters. They can be printed on cards or
can be drafted in the form of social letters.

 Formal Invitations can be of two types:

 Printed invitation cards inviting guests to be present on a particular


occasion. Such invitations do not include the name of the addressee.

 Formal typed (handwritten) letter addressed to a VIP invited to preside


over a social, cultural and educational function. In these invitations to
VIPs the name of the addressee appears prominently.

NOTE: A Formal Invitation is written in card format when it is meant for a


lot of invitees but it is written in a formal letter when it is meant for an
individual.

 Formal invitations are formal and polite, pleasant and courteous.


FORMAT OF FORMAL INVITATION
The invitation is laid out so that each of the following is
in a separate line:

 Name(s) of the host(s) issuing the invitation

 the standard expression

request the pleasure of your company


solicit your gracious presence
cordially invite you
cordially request the honour of your presence
invite you to join
request your benign presence
seek the pleasure of your presence

historic day etc.)

INFORMAL INVITATION
Informal invitations follow the pattern of ordinary personal letters. These
letters are written to relatives, friends and acquaintances.

 These letters are first/second person presentations.

 Personal feelings and emotions find an expression.

 The writer’s address is given in the usual place.

 The salutation is usually “Dear’ plus “Name’.

 The date of writing is given, but the year is generally omitted.

 The style and tone are relaxed and informal.

 Different tenses are used as the sense demands.

 The complimentary close is: Yours sincerely’.

A formal reply is usually very short.

It is brief and to the point.

The quality of a good reply is must always be pleasant.

Even while declining the invitation or expressing inability to attend


one must be polite and courteous.

Formal replies demand a formal tone and treatment.

There is no room for unnecessary details or superfluous matter in


them.

This project has helped me to understand invitations and replies.I have
learnt that there are formal and informal invitations and replies .Under
formal category,there are both card and letter type invitations.In
informal category there is only letter type .
The same is applied in replies as well . In formal replies there are both
card and letter type replies.In informal there is only letter type .The
project has helped me to have a clarity on the types of invitations and
replies .
