EMA 2010 PRACTICE PROBLEMS

Functional notation

1. Given that f ( x )=x 2−1 ; determine:

a) f ( x 2)
b) f (x+ h)
c) f ( √ x+1)
d) f (x+ δx)
2. Given that f ( x )=3 x 2−x + 40 and g ( x )=1−20 x , determine:
a) f (g ( x ))
b) g(f ( x ))
c) f (f ( x ) )
d) g(g ( x ))
e) f (g ( 5 ))

Note that the functions in problem number 2 are called composite

functions. The concept of composite functions will be useful in
understanding the chain rule in differentiation and inverse functions.
Note that sometimes, the composite functions in a, b, c, d and e can be
expressed as ( f ο g )( x ) , ( g ο f )( x ) , ( f ο f ) ( x ) , (g ο g)(x) , (f ο g)(5) respectively.

Limits of functions

1. Evaluate the following limits or state if they do not exist.
