Normal Distribution

CBA-OMBA
What is Normal Distribution?
● A probability distribution that is symmetric about the mean, showing that data
near the mean are more frequent in occurrence than data far from the mean.
● A probability function that specifies how the values of a variable are
distributed is called the normal distribution
● Characterized by a bell shaped curved
● Parameters needed for Standard/Normal Distribution
○ Mean
○ Standard Deviation Where
Z = Z score
X = Observed Value
U = Mean
Sigma = Standard Deviation
Empirical Rule in Normal Distribution
Finding the Z scores given X
Given X ~ N(50,10), what are the values of the mean and standard deviation? (a)
What value of x has a z-score of 14? (b) What is the Z score that corresponds to x
= 30?
Calculating X given the Z score
The average test score in a certain statistics class was 74 with a standard
deviation of 8. There are 2000 students in this class. Use the empirical rule to
answer the following question: (a) what percentage of students scored less than
58? (b) What is the probability that a student scored between 66 and 82 on the
exam? (c) how many students scored at most 90? (d) What percentage of
students scored at least 66? (e) How many students scored more than 98 on the
test?
Using Z-Scores to determine area under the curve
● The empirical rule only applies if you Z score is a WHOLE NUMBER
● If your Z score has a decimal use a Z-TABLE
Solving probability problems using Z-Tables
Normally distributed IQ scores have a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15.
What is the probability of randomly selecting someone with an IQ score that is (a)
less than 80? (b) greater than 136? c) between 95 and 100? (d) what IQ score
corresponds to the 90th percentile? (e) The middle 30% of IQs fall between what
two values?
Calculating the Mean and SD of a Random Sample
Company XYZ manufactures on average 400,000 tires annually. On average, 2&
of the tires were manufactured with a defect. A random sample of 500 tires were
selected for quality control. (a) calculate the mean and standard deviation of the
defective tires in this sample. (b) What is the probability that less than 8 tires will
be defective in the sample? c) What is the probability that more than 15 tires will
have some sort of defect? (d) What is the probability that the number of defective
tires will be between 7 and 14?
