Answer the following questions:

Q1. In which states majority of the people belonging the tribal society lives?

Ans. Rajasthan, Gujarat, Bihar, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh.

Q2. What are the main occupations of tribal people?

Ans. The main occupations of the tribal people are hunting, food gathering, fishing, ploughing
and domesticating sheep and goats etc.

Q 3. In which states the tribal people revolted against the Britishers?

Ans. Bheel people in Madhya Pradesh; Munda in Bihar; Gond in Orissa; Khasi in Meghalya
and Santhal in Bihar and Bengal.
Q 4. Who was the leader of Khasis tribe?

Ans. Tirut Singh.

Q 5. When and which tribe in Chhota Nagpur area revolted against the Britishers?

Ans. Kaul tribe in 1820 A.D.


Q 6. Write a note on tribal society.

Ans. Tribals, who lived in tribes are called 'tribal society'. These people live in one or two
rooms huts. The main occupations of the tribal people are hunting, food gathering, fishing,
ploughing and domesticating sheep and goats etc. Majority of the tribal people live in
Rajasthan, Gujarat, Bihar, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh.
Q 7. Write a note on Birsa Munda.
Ans. Birsa Munda was a powerful man. Local people regarded him as the ‘representative of
God’. He hated money lenders and zamindars those who used to treat badly the Munda
people. He called upon the farmers not to pay taxes to the zamindars. Birsa Munda revolted in
Chhota Nagpur area. The people of Munda society under his leadership attacked many
Britishers. But the Britishers arrested Birsa Munda and suppressed the revolt.

Q 8. Write down the effects of the revolt of Birsa Munda.

Ans. 1. The British government passed the Chhota Nagpur act of 1908 A.D. Through this act,
the small farmers got the right over land.

2. The people of Chhota Nagpur area became more aware from social and religious point of
view. Many people started worshipping the Birsa Munda.

3. The tribal people started the struggle for their rights.
