The Statue of Liberty
Sara Michelle Rojas España
Tenth grade Origin The idea for the Statue of Liberty originated in France during the 1860s. French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi conceived the idea of creating a giant statue as a gift to commemorate the centennial of the United States Declaration of Independence and to celebrate the friendship between France and the United States, two nations that had fought for freedom and democracy. Creation It was designed by Auguste Bartholdi, a French sculptor, who took about 11 years to build it, with the help of engineer Gustave Eiffel, famous for designing the Eiffel Tower. The statue was built in France in sections and then shipped to the United States for final assembly. Delivery The Statue of Liberty was officially dedicated to the United States on October 28, 1886. A grand dedication ceremony was held on Liberty Island (formerly known as Bedloe's Island), where the statue was erected as a symbol of freedom and democracy.
