Calculus 1 Cheat Sheet

1. Limits:

- Direct Calculation: Substitute x into the function.

- Squeeze Theorem: If g(x) <= f(x) <= h(x) and limit of g(x) = limit of h(x) = L,

then limit of f(x) = L.

- Asymptotes: Vertical at points of undefined denominator; horizontal if limits

at infinity exist.

2. Continuity:

- A function is continuous if it is defined, has a limit, and the limit equals the function value.

3. Derivatives:

- Power Rule: d/dx[x^n] = n * x^(n-1).

- Product Rule: d/dx[uv] = u'v + uv'.

- Quotient Rule: d/dx[u/v] = (u'v - uv') / v^2.

- Chain Rule: d/dx[f(g(x))] = f'(g(x)) * g'(x).

4. Critical Points:

- Occur where f'(x) = 0 or f'(x) is undefined.

- Test for maxima/minima using the first or second derivative test.

5. Integration:

- Basic Rule: Integral of x^n dx = x^(n+1)/(n+1) + C, for n != -1.

- Substitution: Integral of f(g(x)) * g'(x) dx = Integral of f(u) du.

- Definite Integrals: Compute the antiderivative and evaluate between bounds.

6. Graphing:

- First Derivative: Determines intervals of increase/decrease.

- Second Derivative: Determines concavity and points of inflection.

7. Optimization:

- Use derivatives to find maximum or minimum values.

- Solve word problems by translating to mathematical functions.

8. Area and Volume:

- Area: Integral from a to b of f(x) dx.

- Volume (Rotation): V = pi * Integral from a to b of [f(x)]^2 dx.

9. Pre-Calculus Essentials:

- Trigonometric Identities: sin^2(x) + cos^2(x) = 1, tan(x) = sin(x)/cos(x).

- Exponentials and Logs: a^(x+y) = a^x * a^y, ln(ab) = ln(a) + ln(b).

- Quadratic Formula: x = (-b ± sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)) / (2a).

10. Theorems:

- Mean Value Theorem: If f is continuous and differentiable,

f'(c) = [f(b)-f(a)] / (b-a).

- Fundamental Theorem of Calculus: Integral from a to b of f'(x) dx = f(b) - f(a).

Remember to practice key problems from previous exams and focus on both concepts and

computation.
