Defining and non-defining

relative clauses
Relative clauses
• We use relative clauses to give information about something or
someone
• Relative pronouns:
• Who (people)
• Which (things)
• That (people and things)
• Where (places)
• Defining and non-defining relative clauses
• Defining relative clauses: are used to identify the person, thing or
place you are talking about
• My brother Ben who lives in England is a doctor. (this presupposes
that I have more brothers, but now I am referring to Ben)

• Non-defining relative clauses are only used to give extra information

• My brother, who lives in England, is a doctor. (this presupposes that
I only have one brother, I just give extra information about him)
• We don’t need to use a subject or object pronoun (he/they/ it…)
when we use a relative pronoun
• A comedy is a play or film which (it*) is very funny.
• We can leave out who, which and that when they are the object of
the clause
• He’s an actor (that) I like.
• That is the story (that) I wrote.
• That is the man who writes stories.
