LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET 1

Name of Student: ____________________________ Section: __________________

Learning Area: SCIENCE Grade Level: GRADE 8 Date: _______________
ScienceTeacher: _______________________________________________________

I. Introductory Concept
In grade 7 you learned that there are different processes of combining materials. It is
therefore expected that you already have an understanding of the difference between
homogenous and heterogenous mixtures. The question is: how do these mixtures of
materials look like at microscopic level? Knowing also that matter occupies space and
has mass you must be curious to discover what is it made of. Find out the answer as you
explore the particle nature of matter.

II. Learning Skills from the MELCs

MELC Number 1: Explain the properties of solids, liquids and gases based on
the particle nature of matter.
OBJECTIVES: By performing the activities, you must be able to:
a. infer from given situations or observable events what matter is made of;
and
b. explain how these observed situations or events give evidence that matter
is made up of tiny particles.

III. Activity: Perform the following activities. You may ask the help of your parent/guardian to
accurately follow the procedures.
A. Activity 1: Sweet water

Materials: transparent drinking glass 1 tablespoon of sugar

1 cup of clean tap water ruler
Procedure:(Note: Make sure to use clean materials since you will be tasting the mixture)
1. Put 1 tablespoon of sugar in a transparent drinking glass.
2. Add the 1 cup of water to the sugar. Mix it thoroughly using the spoon until all
the sugar dissolves in water.
3. Taste the mixture.
B. Analysis 1:
1. What is the taste of the resulting mixture?
________________________________
2. Why were you able to taste the sugar in the mixture? ______________________
3. Draw the particles of sugar and water to explain your answer in number 2.
Represent the particles of sugar using and the particles of water using .
Take note that the particles of sugar are bigger compared to the particles of
water.

Your illustration here:

particles
A. Activity 2: Combined Volume
Materials: ¼ cup of sugar
1 cup of water
Transparent drinking glass
Procedure:
1. Put a ¼ cup of sugar in a transparent drinking glass.
2. Add the 1 cup of water to the sugar. Mix it thoroughly using the spoon
until all the sugar dissolves in water.
3. Observe. Focus your observation on volume of sugar and water mixture.

B. Analysis 2
1. What is the total volume of unmixed ¼ cup of sugar and 1 cup of water? ______
2. This time what is the volume of mixed sugar and water: equal, more than or less
than 1 and ¼ cup? Why? ______________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
3. Draw the particles of sugar and salt to explain your answer in number 2.
Represent the particles of sugar using and the particles of water using .
Take note that the particles of sugar are bigger compared to the particles of water.
Label the last container by selecting from the following options : equal, more than or
less than 1 and ¼ cup of sugar and water mixture.

Your illustration here:

¼ cup of sugar + 1 cup of water = ____________

A. Activity 3: Color me with Coffee

Materials: ¼ teaspoon coffee powder, 1 cup tap water and transparent drinking glass

Procedure:
1. Add ¼ teaspoon of coffee to a one cup tap water in a transparent glass.
Do not mix.
2. Record your observation every 10 minutes within 1 hour.

B. Analysis 3
1.What happened to the coffee powder after it was added to the water?
_________________________________________________________________
2. When you add coffee to the cup of water, what do you notice? Did the particles of
coffee spread out in water?___________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________
3. Is it the particles of coffee, the particles of water or both particles spread out and
move? Why do you think so?
_________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________

C. Abstraction
1. What is matter made of?
______________________________________________________________
2. What are in between the particles?
______________________________________________________________
3. Why do particles of matter move?
______________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________

4. Do particles of different matter look the same? Why? ___________________

______________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________

D. Application
Philosophers and scientists came up with the early ideas of particles.
Democritus believed that matter is made up of tiny particles which are indivisible. He
called this particle, atomos. Two centuries ago, John Dalton presented an
evidence that all matter is made up of very small particles called atoms which are
indivisible and indestructible. What is common in the idea of Democritus and Dalton
about the particles of matter? Do you think this idea is final? Why or why not?

For STE only

Design a simple experiment to prove that matter is made up of particles and
that there are spaces in between them. Select only one from the given set of
materials that are available at home for your experiment. Follow the format below and
use a separate paper for your write up.
I. Problem
II. Hypothesis
III. Materials
IV. Procedure
V. Observation
VI. Conclusion
Set A: 50mL isoprophyl alcohol
100mL of tap water
Transparent container/bottle
Marking pen
Measuring cup
(Note if you prefer to use these materials seek the assistance of your parent
/guardian. Make sure to handle the alcohol properly. Do not touch your eyes and
mouth during the experiment. Immediately dispose the mixture, keep the alcohol and clean
the working area after the experiment.)

Set B:
1 tablespoon of salt
Tablespoon
1 cup of water
Marking Pen
Transparent container/bottle

(Note . Immediately dispose the mixture, keep the materials and clean the working
area after the experiment.)
