Define the elements of information. 2. Demonstrate ethical use of information. 3. Obey the pertinent guide to information literacy. LESSON PROPER: INFORMATION LITERACY INFORMATION LITERACY According to the American Library Association, “Information literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information”. Information literacy empowers people in all walks of life to seek, evaluate, use and create information effectively to achieve their personal, social, occupational and educational goals. It is a basic human right in a digital world and promotes social inclusion in all nations. PURPOSE OF INFORMATION LITERACY Information literacy forms the basis for lifelong learning. It is common to all disciplines, to all learning environments, and to all levels of education. It enables learners to master content and extend their investigations, become more self-directed, and assure greater control over their learning. The steps of information literacy are as follows: Identifying/recognizing information needs: The first is that you have to define your need, your problem, or the question. You have to know what information you need. Determining sources of information: The second step is being able to find the information, locate it, access it, and retrieve it. You can do that a variety of sources. These sources include prints which are books, magazines and text; electronic means; or human information sources, meaning we ask someone, ask a expert, or ask a colleague. Citing or searching for information: A process which people undertake to locate or retrieve specific information to meet an information need. Analyzing and evaluating the quality of information: Once you have the information then you need to assess the credibility of it. Just because you have the information at your fingertips does not mean it is good information. Is it the information that you need? Is it valid? Is it reliable? Organizing, storing or archiving information: You then have to organize that information so you can use it. If you have ever Google something, you know you can get a million hits and you have to figure out if you got the best information, and organize everything that you have complied. Using information in an ethical, efficient and effective way: The ethical use of information by providing information on quoting, paraphrasing and citing the work of others and on recognizing and avoiding plagiarism. Creating and communicating new knowledge: The last step of information literacy is communicating that information. You have to communicate that information. You have to communicate it appropriately to whoever, a client, colleague, doctor or the community. You have to make sure are doing that both legally and ethically.
