Pattern Details
Skill Level
Easy-Intermediate: knowledge of basic stitches and shaping, as well as a willingness to crochet in
various directions, is required.

Recommended Supplies
4.00/4.25 mm (g) crochet hook
~ 200 yards worsted weight yarn* per motif set
(100% cotton yarn is pictured, but not required)
*See Sizing Guide for more information on using other yarn weights
Scissors, Tapestry Needle, Stitch Markers or Safety Pins

Gauge
Gauge is not crucial for this pattern. Use consistent tension and materials for projects with multiple
pieces.

Finished Size
Just like in writing, number and letter sizes vary. The largest uppercase alphabet pieces are
approximately 4” x 4” (using materials listed). The largest lowercase alphabet and numbers &
punctuation pieces are approximately 3.5” x 3.5”. Size will vary depending on the motif and your yarn,
hook, and tension. For more information on motif sizes, see the Sizing Guide.

Pattern Techniques
Working in the Edge of Rows
1 2 3 4

Instead of flipping piece over (as you would when you “turn”), rotate piece and start sc by inserting
hook into side of next sc.

Working in the Back of Chain

1 2 3 4

Looking at back of chain, start sc by inserting hook through chain under back ridge. Continue stitch as
you normally would.

Working in the Round

Pieces marked as “worked in the round” are worked in a spiral. Do not turn after any round, but
instead continue working in the round (being careful not to twist) without a slip stitch or other joins.

Weaving in Ends for Pieces Worked in the Round

1 2 3 4

After completing last stitch, cut yarn and pull it through loop. Insert hook from right to left under “v”
of first sc in round. Hook yarn and pull it through. Insert hook from back of last sc up through center
of “v.” Hook yarn and pull it through. Pull end gently to secure. Weave in ends as you normally would.

Table of Contents

Attaching Letters
After pinning letters/characters to each piece, use one of the two methods below to attach characters.
Chain Stitch
Attaching characters with the chain stitch takes longer, but the result resembles a crochet chain and
makes each character’s edging more consistent.
1 2 3 4

Thread tapestry needle. Pull needle up through both layers at first space, insert needle back into
same space. Bring needle up through next space and up through the yarn loop. Pull yarn gently
to tighten loop (but do not tighten too much - letter will pucker). To continue, insert needle back
through loop and into same space. Bring needle up through next space and yarn loop and pull yarn
gently to tighten. Fasten off and weave in ends as you would for pieces worked in the round. This
technique can take some time to ensure your stitches are consistent, so don’t get discouraged.

Backstitch
Backstitch is the quickest way to securely attach letters to pieces. All pieces shown in this pattern
were attached using backstitch, and yarn estimates were based on this technique.
1 2 3 4

Thread tapestry needle. Pull needle up through both layers at first space, insert needle into second
space, pull needle up through third space, insert needle back into second space. Continue by pulling
yarn up through next empty space and inserting it back into the previous space. Fasten off and weave
in ends.

Reading this Pattern

This written pattern includes parenthesis and directions separated by commas.
For example, this: 13 sc, (sc, inc) 3 times is the same as: 1 sc in each of next 13 stitches, sc in next
stitch, inc in next stitch, sc in next stitch, inc in next stitch, sc in next stitch, inc in next stitch. Get it?
