Explanation of Rock Quality Designation (RQD)

Rock Mass Rating (RMR) Explanation - Simple Calculations

1. Layer Thickness:

Measure the distance between rock layers or discontinuities.

Example:

- Measurements: 12 cm, 15 cm, 10 cm, 13 cm, 11 cm.

- Average Thickness:

Average Thickness = (12 + 15 + 10 + 13 + 11) / 5 = 12.2 cm.

2. Structural Features:

Record geological features like joints, faults, and their effect on stability.

Example:

- Found: 3 joints, 2 faults, and 1 sandstone channel.

- Average Spacing:

Average Spacing = (20 + 50) / 2 = 35 cm.

3. Weatherability:

Test how rocks break down with water exposure.

Example:

- 10 rock pieces weigh 500 g initially; after the test, they weigh 450 g.

- First Cycle Slake Durability Index:

Index = (Final Weight / Initial Weight) × 100 = (450 / 500) × 100 = 90%.

4. Rock Strength:

Explanation of Rock Quality Designation (RQD)

Use the Point Load Test to find compressive strength.

Example:

- Rock breaks at 20 kg load with a 5 cm distance.

- Index (I) = Load / Distance² = 20 / 5² = 0.8.

- Compressive Strength (Co):

Co = 14 × I = 14 × 0.8 = 11.2 kg/cm².

5. Groundwater:

Measure water seeping from rock layers.

Example:

- Water flow rates: 10 ml/min, 12 ml/min, 14 ml/min.

- Average Water Flow:

Average Flow = (10 + 12 + 14) / 3 = 12 ml/min.

6. Rock Mass Rating (RMR):

Combine ratings of multiple rock layers.

Example:

- Rock 1: RMR = 60, Thickness = 3 m.

- Rock 2: RMR = 50, Thickness = 2 m.

- Combined RMR:

Combined RMR = [(60 × 3) + (50 × 2)] / (3 + 2) = 56.

By following these calculations, you can systematically evaluate rock quality and stability for mining

or construction projects.
