Unit: Cellular Energetics

Lesson 23
Cellular Respiration & Photosynthesis - Introduction

Week of December 9

Learning Objective: Students will be able to evaluate how energy is released in a cell through
the analysis of textual evidence.

Student Learning Targets:

1. I can discuss the two major processes involved in the flow of energy in an ecosystem:
cellular respiration and photosynthesis.
2. I can describe the chemical equation for photosynthesis and cellular respiration to
explain how these processes are related to each other and to the transfer of energy in
an ecosystem.

Focus Question: What type of energy is used in cells, and what is the ultimate source of this
energy?

Big Idea 2:
Biological systems utilize free energy and molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce and to maintain dynamic homeostasis.
Common Core Learning Standards:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RST.11-12.1 Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of science and technical texts, attending to important
distinctions the author makes and to any gaps or inconsistencies in the account.CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RST.11-12.2 Determine the central ideas
or conclusions of a text; summarize complex concepts, processes, or information presented in a text by paraphrasing them in simpler but
still accurate terms CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RST.11-12.7 Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and
media (e.g., quantitative data, video, multimedia) in order to address a question or solve a problem.
College Board Science Standards:
Essential knowledge 2.A: Growth, reproduction and maintenance of the organization of living systems require free energy and matter
Essential knowledge 2.A.1: All living systems require constant input of free energy. Science Practice 1: The student can use
representations and models to communicate scientific phenomena and solve scientific problems. Science Practice 3: The student can engage
in scientific questioning to extend thinking or to guide investigations within the context of the AP course.Science Practice 5: The student
can perform data analysis and evaluation of evidence. Science Practice 6: The student can work with scientific explanations and theories.
Science Practice 7: The student is able to connect and relate knowledge across various scales, concepts and representations in and across
domains.

Directions: Read and analyze AP Biology textbook (chapter 8), pages 151 – 159, 162,
Living Environment textbook, pages 198-200 and/or conduct online research. Complete
tasks A-C.

Additional Student Support – Photosynthesis video, Cellular Respiration video,

Photosynthesis Khan Academy supports, Cellular Respiration Khan Academy Supports.
Task A - Individual Work (15 minutes) [Didactic]
1) Use the Living Environment textbook to read pages 198 - 200. Take notes as you
read.

2) Explain why organisms need a constant supply of energy AND how they get that
energy. Be specific.
3) Midpoint Check: Keeping in mind today’s learning targets, discuss photosynthesis and
cellular respiration using your analysis and interpretation of the diagrams below.

Re-read and reflect on today’s learning targets. How comfortable are you so far with
today’s learning targets 1 & 2? Check the box that corresponds to your answer.
Learning Targets… Poor (1) Ok (2) Good (3) Very Good (4)

#1. I can discuss the two major

processes involved in the flow of
energy in an ecosystem: cellular
respiration and photosynthesis.
● define cellular respiration and
recognize its importance to organisms.
● define photosynthesis and recognize
its importance to some bacteria
(cyanobacteria), plants and algae.
● explain how both processes contribute
to the flow of energy in ecosystems.
#2. I can describe the chemical
equation for photosynthesis and
cellular respiration to explain how
these processes are related to
each other and to the transfer of
energy in an ecosystem.
● by memorizing and being able to
explain the chemical equations of
cellular respiration and
photosynthesis.
● explain how both processes help
transfer energy in ecosystems, from
one living organism to the next.

Note: If you evaluated yourself in either the ok or poor column, we suggest checking out
this text to better assist you in your understanding.

4) Do you have questions/doubts you have about this topic?

Task B- In Your Group (15 minutes)– Check Your understanding…[Reflective]

1) In your group, share out your answer to task A.

2) As a group, do you have questions/doubts? If so, what are they? Write these in the
space below:

Keeping in mind the lessons learning targets:

3) Assessment Question: a - Study the diagram and conduct research to explain the
process of photosynthesis. b- Discuss how photosynthesis is involved in the flow of
