Objective: Used knowledge of text structure to glean the information

he/she needs.

Subject: EAPP

Grade Level: Grade 11

Learning across curriculum:

1. English - Identifying main ideas and supporting details in a text

2. Science - Analyzing cause and effect relationships in scientific texts

3. Social Studies - Understanding the chronological order of events in historical texts

Review Motivation:

1. Show a short video clip related to a current event or an interesting topic and ask
students to discuss the main points they gathered from the video.

2. Display a text with various text structures (e.g., description, problem-solution,

compare-contrast) and ask students to identify the structure and the main ideas in
each section.

3. Conduct a group discussion on the importance of being able to extract relevant

information from a text efficiently.

Activity 1: Text Structure Identification

Materials: Texts with different structures, highlighters, graphic organizers

Instructions:

1. Provide students with a variety of texts (e.g., articles, essays, news reports) and
ask them to identify the text structure used in each.

2. In pairs or small groups, students will highlight the main ideas and supporting
details in the text using different colors.

3. Students will then create a graphic organizer that represents the text structure and
the main ideas.
Assessment questions:

1. What text structure was used in the given article? Provide evidence to support
your answer.

2. How did identifying the main ideas and supporting details help you understand the
text better?

Activity 2: Cause and Effect Analysis

Materials: Scientific texts, graphic organizers

Instructions:

1. Provide students with scientific texts that explain cause and effect relationships.

2. In pairs or small groups, students will identify the main causes and effects
discussed in the text.

3. Students will create a cause and effect graphic organizer to visually represent the
relationships.

Assessment questions:

1. Identify the main cause discussed in the given scientific text. Explain its effect.

2. How did creating a cause and effect graphic organizer help you understand the
text better?

Activity 3: Chronological Order Sorting

Materials: Historical texts, index cards

Instructions:

1. Provide students with excerpts from historical texts that describe events in a non-
chronological order.

2. In pairs or small groups, students will read the excerpts and discuss the correct
chronological order of the events.

3. Students will sort the events by writing each event on an index card and arranging
them in the correct order.

Assessment questions:

1. What is the correct chronological order of the events described in the given
historical text?

2. How did sorting the events help you understand the text better?

Analysis:

Review the outcomes of each activity as a class discussion. Encourage students to

share their strategies, challenges, and improvements in identifying text structures,
cause and effect relationships, and chronological order.

Abstraction:

Summarize the importance of understanding text structure in extracting relevant

information efficiently. Discuss how identifying cause and effect relationships and
chronological order can enhance understanding in specific contexts.

Application:

Provide students with a real-life problem or scenario related to the objective. For
example, ask them to read a job advertisement and identify the qualifications and
responsibilities mentioned using their knowledge of text structure.

Assessment:
Teachers can assess the learning of the students based on the learning
objectives through:

1. Observing students' participation and engagement during activities.

2. Reviewing students' completed graphic organizers and index card sorting activities
for accuracy and understanding.

Assignment:

Assign students to find a news article or scientific text and create a visual
representation (e.g., infographic, mind map) that highlights the main ideas and
supporting details using appropriate text structures, cause and effect relationships,
or chronological order.
