INTRODUCTION

Students' engagement and participation in their learning is an issue that has

been needing to address over the years by many in the field of education. Cooperative

learning is certainly one of the techniques for involving the learner.

During participation and teaching assistantship, the researcher observed that

students were more focused on the lecture method. The teachers do most of the talking,

goal-setting, and evaluating (Brooks and Brooks, 1993). Teachers give importance to

and concentrate on the area of shaping the cognitive abilities of the students more than

other domains. During the demonstration, the researcher noticed that students were

more focused and attentive during group activities. Students were seen to have fun

while doing the classroom activities at the same time they are learning. Other aspects of

learning such as social aspects should also be considered, students interacting with

other students are more successful. Interaction coupled with hands-on learning is highly

motivating (Adams, 1996).

This study is conducted to empower students' engagement in the classroom. The

classroom focuses only on the lecture method limiting the learning of the students. As a

result, students cannot apply what they have learned in real life. In a context, this action

research was undertaken to identify the factors that hinders student’s engagement in

the classroom and what factors that contribute to student’s engagement. It also

addresses what are the techniques employed by the teacher to support student

engagement.
Specifically, this study aims to:

1) What are the factors that hinders student engagement in the classroom?

2) What are the factors that contribute to student’s engagement in the

classroom?

3) What are the techniques/methods employed by the teacher to support

student’s engagement?

4) Is there a significant difference before and after implementing cooperative

learning in the classroom among Grade 8 students?

Cooperative learning promotes learning and fosters respects and friendships

among diverse group students. In cooperative learning students typically work in teams.

This way they can break into pairs for some activities, and get back together in teams. It

is important, however, to establish classroom rules that guide students to contribute,

stay on task, help each other, encourage each other, share, solve problems, and also

give, and accept feedback from peers. The students will experience before and after

implementation of cooperative learning tasks to test their engagement and participation.

METHODS

The study will have utilized a quantitative research method using descriptive-

correlation design. The descriptive design will be used to determine the factors that

hinders and contributes to student’s engagement in the classroom. The correlational

research design will be utilized to determine the significant difference before and after

implementing cooperative learning in the classroom. The respondents of this study will

be all Grade 8 high school students of Pagangan High School in the school year 2023-

2024. The questionnaires will be adopted from the study of Hoorani (2004) and it will be

supported with a follow-up interview. The questionnaire and interviews will be directly

administered to the respondents. Independent T-Test will be utilized to determine the

significant difference before and after implementing cooperative learning in the

classroom among Grade 8 high school students.
