2004 CATALOG FEATURE SYSTEM

The Power to Explore Deep Space
A Turn-key System Above the Clouds

Advanced Energy Group was recently commissioned to

design and build a custom engineered stand alone power
system for deployment above the clouds in the Andes
Mountains in N. Chile in South America. It provides power
for sensitive equipment used to establish whether a
particular global site is suitable for constructing an
extremely large 30 meter wide space telescope.
Temperature at the site ranges from -20C to 20C. The
power system was designed using a modular concept to
enable rapid on-site deployment by as few as two persons
at the extremely remote site as well as provide maximum
reliability. The system was pre-deployed to complete
various tests at a nearby observatory in La Serena, Chile
(see photo), before being disassembled and transported in
small off-road vehicles to the mountain top site. The PV
array generates 3.3 kWp using 30 Shell SM110-24P
modules processed through three Solar Boost 50 charge controllers. The battery provides up to a full week of autonomy in -20C
temperatures using 24 Concorde PVX-2580L sealed batteries. The distributed power provides the user with dual AC voltages using Exeltech
sine wave inverters; both 120 VAC 60Hz and European 230 VAC 50 Hz. The system also provides dual DC voltages; 24 VDC and 12 VDC.
The power system was successfully deployed the very first time without any issues, and the customer reports it is operating "superbly".
Getting it right the first time requires expertise and attention to detail. That's what we're known for.

So whether you need to power a small repeater site, a large telecom site, a remote cabin or an entire home or business we have everything
you need; highest quality equipment, expert technical support and highly competitive prices.

Power Station
The SunWize® Power Station consists of a PV array which generates DC electricity from sunlight,
a battery bank to store the DC energy and an inverter to convert from DC to
utility-grade AC electricity.
Several factors must be considered when choosing between a hybrid or stand-alone
configuration. Hybrid stations are sized to provide 25-75% of the load requirements by the
engine generator, resulting in a lower first-cost for a given load. Stand-alone PV systems are
sized to provide 100% of the load and offer very low operating and maintenance costs.

SunWize PV Hybrid Power Station Components Diagram
1. Photovoltaic (“PV”) Panels
High-efficiency, single crystal silicon PV modules provide higher amp-hour per watt output than other technologies and include dual bypass
diode protection. Modular PV panels permit expansion to accommodate increased loads.
2. Adjustable Array Structure
PV array tilt is easily adjustable from 30-60 degrees to maximize solar energy. Further adjustment of 0-30 degrees possible with special
positioning bars. 2400W available with non-adjustable tilt only.
3. Control Center
The control enclosure is a NEMA 3R powder-coated steel box housing the power
distribution components (DC controller/distribution, inverter and AC distribution), 1
disconnects, system monitor and appropriate wire terminals. Enclosure is provided
with rainproof vents and a ground fault protected electrical outlet. Optional remote
monitoring equipment is available.

Integrated Outdoor DC Power Supply with Battery Backup

The SunWize BC-series DC power supply provides regulated power and hours of backup run
time for DC loads. This fully integrated unit converts AC mains power to DC in order to float
charge the battery bank while powering the DC load. Upon loss of mains, the battery powers
the DC load(s) with zero transfer time, because the loads are connected to the battery bank
100% of the time. The unit is comprised of a switch mode rectifier with 3-stage charging,
maintenance-free, deep-cycle batteries and full circuit protection. The circuit is fully protected
via breakers and fuses on the AC input, connection to the batteries, and DC loads. The
The SunWize® BC-Series outdoor, lockable, aluminum enclosure includes tamper-proof hardware suitable for pole or wall
DC Power Supply mounting. User’s manual and full wiring schematics for quick wiring are included. Various
battery sizes are available. Temperature compensated models are available to increase battery
lifetime and prevent thermal runaway. DC ripple <50mV. One-year warranty.

safe, secure and fully automatic

The SunWize® Backup Electric Systems are fully integrated and automated power packages.
The systems are designed to maintain a home’s basic loads such as lighting, refrigeration,
furnace fan, sump pumps and television for one to five days depending on user habits and
conservation during power outages. When the utility is providing AC power to the inverter/
charger, the system will act as a battery charger to keep the DC battery storage bank fully
charged. When the primary source of AC power fails, the system becomes an inverter that
converts the DC battery power into utility-grade AC power. The transfer is completely
automatic.
The SunWize
Standby Power System
The SunWize Standby Power Systems are capable of charging from solar-electric modules
and/or a generator using an optional charge controller with a DC circuit breaker. The controllers
use DC power from the solar modules to charge the battery bank. The controllers also protect

Solar Designer Lighting Systems

SunWize® Designer Lighting Systems (DLS) use solar technology to provide lighting
in areas where there is no utility power or where excavation for underground power
lines make utility power too costly.

The SunWize Designer Lighting Systems combine the latest technology available
to provide years of reliable, low maintenance operation. The DLS control panel and
batteries are contained in a ‘slim-line’, outdoor enclosure and is fully tested with a
factory assembled control panel for simple, trouble free installation.

The SunWize Designer Lighting Systems use an ultra high efficiency luminaire that
incorporates computer-designed, polished specular reflector to maximize the
lighting intensity and coverage area. SunWize Designer Lighting Systems are color
coordinated in attractive powder coated architectural bronze including the optional
pole and arm.

The luminaire is available with either low pressure sodium (LPS) or fluorescent (FL)
lamps. The LPS lamp is a monochromatic (yellow-orange) light source, delivering
the highest possible lumens per watt. Compact fluorescent lamps provide slightly
less lumens, but produce a white light (4100K), which appears brighter than low
pressure sodium lamps and should be used in areas where color rendition is desired.

DLS’s are offered with a choice of light fixtures:
