• Use - your BRAIN to make connections with our story “The Fisherman
and His Wife” and the familiar fairy tale, “Sleeping Beauty”.
• Using this motto means, during our lesson we will look at our text,
learning about our characters through pictures and story development,
listening as we read aloud discussing in whole group, independently and as
partners to learn from each other, learning about fairy tales, working on
our language through new words and finally writing, by changing one
element of our text.
• How are these fairy tales similar to each other and to Sleepy Beauty?

TODAY, you will hear a fairy tale called “The Fisherman and His Wife”;
• Originally retold in Germany;
• By two brothers known as the Brothers Grimm;

This is a picture of a real fish. The story you will hear today is about
a fish. The fish in our story will act differently from any fish you will
ever see or hear about.

The boy tried to open the door with all his might, but it would not open.
Enchanted, adj – as if under a magic spell; Ruby and Hiroto knew they were
in an enchanted forest because there were jewels growing on the trees.
The fisherman’s wife asks: ”Go back and ask him to change this dinky hut into a
charming cottage.”
Charming means very pleasing: Why does the wife wish for a charming cottage?
Vocabulary Moment
Charming- very pleasing or appealing; Example: The family stayed in a charming little
cottage at the beach.

The fish states: “Go home,” said the fish. “She has her cottage.”
Do you think the wife will really have a charming cottage? Do you think the

Would you grant her another wish if you were the fish?

• In the read-aloud you heard the fisherman’s wife say, “It displeases me that the sun and
moon will not rise and set at my command.”
• Say the word displeases with me.
• Displeases means to be unhappy or bothered about something.
• It displeases the baseball players when their game is cancelled because of rain.
• Tell me about something that displeases you. Try to use the word displeases when you tell
about it. [Ask two or three students. If necessary, guide and/or rephrase students’
responses: “It displeases me when . . .”]

• The prefix dis– often makes a word have the opposite meaning.
• Displeases is the antonym, or opposite, of the word pleases.

His Wife” and describe how it changes the original text. [W.2.8]
• Then you will create your own version of the story changing one
element of the story; For example you can change the fisherman’s job,
where the story takes place, or one of the wife’s wishes;
• In the new version the wife will make only three (3) wishes;
• Let’s identify the characters, setting and plot (the wishes of “The
Fisherman and His Wife” together as a class.
