listening as we read aloud discussing in whole group, independently and as
partners to learn from each other, learning about fairy tales, working on
our language through new words and finally writing, by changing one
element of our text.

Things to Remember

• Fairy Tales often feature members of a royal family.


• Such as princes, princesses, kings and queens; characters with special powers or
magical transformations.
• Many things that happen in fairy tales are fantasy and cannot happen in real life; in other
words fairy tales are fiction.
• They also often have a happy ending, and end with the phrase “they lived happily ever
after” or some similar phrase.

TODAY, you will hear a fairy tale called “The Fisherman and His Wife”;
• Originally retold in Germany;
• By two brothers known as the Brothers Grimm;
• Let’s look at Germany on the map;

This is a picture of a real fish. The story you will hear today is about
a fish. The fish in our story will act differently from any fish you will
ever see or hear about.

Charming means very pleasing: Why does the wife wish for a charming cottage?

Charming- very pleasing or appealing; Example: The family stayed in a charming little
cottage at the beach.

The fish states: “Go home,” said the fish. “She has her cottage.”

Do you think the wife will really have a charming cottage? Do you think the
fish minds granting the wish?

rudely and proudly.

Later the fisherman’s wife sent for him: What do you think the wife will ask for:
Would you grant her another wish if you were the fish?

The queen states, “Husband!” she bellowed, “it displeases me that the sun and
moon will not rise and set at my command.

Vocabulary Moment

If something pleases you, it makes you happy. So, what does displeases mean?

Displeases – causes someone to feel unhappy or annoyed; Example: It displeases the


baseball players when their game is cancelled due to rain. Variations: displease,
displeased, displeasing
