WHAT IS INTERNET?
The Internet is a globally connected network system that facilitates communication and data
services through a vast collection of private, public , business , academic and government
networks of local to global scope , linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless and optical
networking technologies. It serves as a virtual infrastructure that links millions of computers and
electronic devices worldwide , allowing users to exchange information seamlessly. The Internet
carries a vast range of information resources and services such as interlinked hypertext
documents and applications of the World Wide Web, electronic mail and file sharing.

The Internet is decentralized , which means there is no central authority is governing its
operations. To enable communication between devices, the Internet relies on protocols and
standards that govern how small units of data are formatted, addressed and transmitted.

Protocols are rules that allow the exchange and transmission of data between devices. Some
well-known examples of protocols include :

 IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) – These are protocols for retrieving email
messages from a mail server to a client device.

 FTP (File Transfer Protocol) – A protocol for transferring files between a client and a
server on a computer network.

 SSH (Secure Shell) – A cryptographic network protocol that provides secure, encrypted
communication and secure remote access to devices over an unsecured network.

 VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol ) – Used for voice call services.

 XMPP (Extensible Messaging Presence Protocol ) – Used for messaging services like
Whatsapp.

 HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) – Used for the World Wide Web.

 HTTPS (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure) – An extension of HTTP that adds
encryption and secure communications through the use of SSL/TLS protocols.

 TLS / SSL ( Transport Layer Security / Secure Socket Layer) – A standard that extends
the format of e-mail messages to support non-text attachments , multimedia content and
character encodings.

 TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) – A fundamental protocol that provides reliable,

connection-oriented communication between devices over the Internet
ADVANTAGES OF THE INTERNET
The Internet has changed how people live and work, giving them greater access to information
and services. The Internet is a platform for sharing information. It is the quickest way to
exchange data. It’s a great way to share knowledge, images, files , music and films. Computers,
laptops and mobile phones are used to access the Internet. Everything has become a lot more
accessible and cost-saving. Simply, the Internet is the world’s most innovative and engaging
innovation. It is the most beneficial technology for sharing knowledge from one part of the world
to another.

The Internet has demolished all boundaries, which were the barriers between people and has
made everything accessible. The Internet is helpful to us in different ways. It is beneficial for
sharing information with people in any corner of the world. It is also used in schools,
governments and private offices and other public spaces. We stay connected to our close ones
and share all the recent and live news with the help of the internet. Sitting in our homes, we
know about all that’s happening around the world with a click or a swipe. The Internet gives an
answer to almost every question and touches every aspect of our lives.

The Internet benefits almost everyone including the people, businesses and society. Below is a
complete list of all the advantages of the Internet.

1)Information, knowledge & learning – The Internet contains an endless supply of knowledge
and information that lets us learn about almost any topic or question we may have. Using a
search engine like Google, we can ask virtually any question and find a web page with an answer
to any information about that question. There are also millions of videos on sites like Youtube
explaining various topics and it helps us to learn many different subjects.

2) Connectivity, communication and sharing – In the past, it would take days and sometimes
even months to receive a letter from someone else. Today, with the Internet, we can send an e-
mail to anyone in the world and often have it delivered in less than a minute. Other forms of
communication such as chat and VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol), also allow instant
communication with anyone in the world. Online forums are also places where people who share
common interests can connect and talk about what they enjoy or ask questions of other experts in
the field.

3)Entertainment – The Internet has also provided a wide range of entertainment , with more
entertainment providers giving access to on-demand services, movie and music streaming,
downloads and gaming services.

4) Banking , bills and shopping – The Internet provides access to our bank account to view the
balance, make transactions and send money. Also, many services enable us to view and pay bills
electronically. Online shopping is another huge advantage of the Internet, allowing people to
find products of interest and buy them without having to visit a store. The internet provides easy
access to compare prices between companies and see what others think about a product through
online reviews to help make better purchasing decisions.

5) Address, mapping & Contact information - With the help of GPS (Global Positioning
System) technology , the Internet helps map and direct us to almost every place in the world. We
can quickly route to our location and find businesses in our area that may sell or provide a
service we need.

6) Selling and making money – The internet is a perfect place to sell most goods if we are a
business or want to sell products and services. Because anyone in the world with internet access
can find our website, we could have more potential customers than we ever could with a local
retail store. The Internet is always on and always available, which means we have the potential
to sell goods everyday at all times. The Internet also allows businesses to advertise their product
or service to everyone in the world to specify an exact demographic they want to reach.

7) Collaboration, work from home and access to a global workforce – The Internet is the perfect
place to work with other people worldwide. Several online services help us work with people
worldwide and with instant communication, it can even make producing new products and
services faster. An Internet connection allows many people to work from home or have a virtual
office. Many businesses allow employees to work from home using their computers and Internet
connection. Working from home can save people money by not having to pay for child care and
save them money and time by eliminating the daily commute to and from work. Moreover, if we
are a business that needs employees, many online services can give us access to people looking
for a job all around the world. Hiring someone from another part of the country or world give us
access to a broader talent pool and may also be cheaper.

8) Internet of Things – The Internet helps connect devices in our home and smarter by giving
them access to the Internet. For example, the Nest Thermostat can connect to the Internet to help
control the heating and cooling of our homes. Also, once these devices are connected, they can
be controlled remotely using our computer or smart phone. Connecting IoT (Internet of Things)
devices to our home can become smarter and more efficient and help save energy, money and
time.

9) Cloud computing and cloud storage – The Internet connects our computers and Internet-
enabled devices to cloud services like cloud computing and cloud storage. With cloud
computing, a device can access more powerful computers and supercomputers to perform
complex tasks while we or our business works on other tasks. Cloud storage synchronizes data
across any Internet-connected devices, so that we can access our files from anywhere. It makes
backing up information easier and safer as our data is securely stored in a professionally
maintained server. So, if we use a cloud storage backup service and our home and office burns
down, we will not lose all our valuable data.
10) Donations and funding – With access to a much wider audience, anyone with an Internet
connection can quickly donate to their favorite charity or help fund projects and ideas that
interest them. Also, those looking for charity can find many online services that help make it
easier to help donate or support their causes.

In conclusion, the Internet is a real tool to help, learn, connect , design , develop and entertain
in every sector. We are saving so many hours by doing work from home, getting connected
through video conferences, and sharing documents online. Organizations can make decisions
with betterment as different services are provided such as Analyzing and management of their
data with security. It is also part of the risks involved as we share information on the internet
sometimes which could lead to cyberbullying and attacks. It is advisable to use the Internet under
the limit and share our productive time with people we care about physically to stay healthy and
connected.

Historical review of the major stages in the development of the Internet.

During the 1960’s cold war, The United States Department of Defense’s Advanced Research
Projects Agency (ARPA) was tasked with creating a robust, reliable communication network that
would be capable of withstanding a nuclear attack. This new communication network needed to
be decentralized to prevent a single point of failure (SPoF) and redundancy so information could
be rerouted in real time if network operations were disrupted.

The first network prototype was called the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network
(ARPANET). It was one network that connected four major universities and research
institutions. Historically it is important because the researchers used packet-switching to transmit
data across the network in small, manageable units.

In 1974, researchers Vint Cerf and Robert Kahn introduced the idea of an Internet Protocol
Suite, commonly known as Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol (TCP/ IP). The two
protocols provide a framework for computers to send and receive data over disparate,
interconnected networks.

As the concept of Internet working gained momentum in the 1980’s, the National Science
Foundation established the National Science Foundation Network (NSFNET) . The NSFNET
became a backbone for the Internet and essentially created a “network of networks” that
expanded network access beyond the Department of Defense’s earlier ARPANET.

It wasn’t until 1989, however, when British computer scientist, Sir Tim Barners-Lee proposed
the idea of interconnecting digital content as well as networks that people began to appreciate the
potential of the Internet. In his proposal, Berners-Lee outlined the concept of hypertext and a
new markup language to create an information-sharing system.
The Internet was created in the 1950’s and 60’s as the United States was engaged with the Cold
War with the Soviet Union. Each country was working to increase its science and technology
capabilities in order to prevent nuclear attacks from the other, and also remain capable of
attacking the other if the situation devolves. At that time, computers were much larger and more
expensive than today’s models. Mainframe computers took up entire rooms and were only able
to do specific tasks. Researchers needed to be able to use the computers to perform these tasks ,
but often had to travel long distances to find a computer to do a specific task. The proposed
solution was a way to connect the computers so they could speak to each other, allowing
researchers to share data without needing to travel to the location of the computer.

The Internet has gone through several stages of development since then, from Web1 (read-
only, like a newspaper) to Web2 (Interactive, like social media), and now Web3, which is being
built on blockchain technology. Unlike the previous versions, Web3 is decentralized, meaning
there is no central authority controlling it. It is also more secure and private, making it less
vulnerable to intrusion and fraud.

In conclusion, the Internet has come a long way from its inception as a small number of
interconnected computers carrying a limited amount of data in 1977 to its current form as a
worldwide network that has revolutionized the way we communicate and access information.
The next step in its evolution, Web3, promises to be even more transformative, providing greater
security, privacy and decentralization.

HOW DOES THE INTERNET NEGATIVELY AFFECTS STUDENTS LIVES?

The Internet is so popular nowadays that almost anyone uses it. It is accessible by almost any
person who tries to connect to one of its central or main networks. It can be accessed by users of
any age and condition. The effects of the Internet on students can be both positive and negative.
On one hand the internet provides students with easy access to information, entertainment and
opportunities for social interaction. It can enhance their knowledge, help them find entertainment
and alleviate loneliness.

Even though there are many positive effects of technology, the Internet can have negative
effects on students academic performance, personal growth and behavior. It can lead to
distractions, sleep deprivation, poor time management and a decrease in academic progress.

Technology has worked to change students’ lives negatively. Firstly, it has made some students
lazier. Technology also has a role in students’ moral degradation. According to a research among
the 10 negative effects of technology on students and learning, it is revealed that 90% of students
spent most of their time on social media instead of learning. It was found that technology is quite
impactful on education, but its negativity is really affecting the younger ones. Overdependency
on technology educationally has caused a lot of damage to students and teachers, and it has
become a habit that needs to be checked to avoid unresolved damage. It was found that:

 Children six and under spend an average of 2 hours daily with screen media, mostly TV
and videos
 Watching TV begins at very early ages, well before the medical community recommends
 A high proportion of very young children are using new digital media, including 4-6 year
olds who have played video games and 70% who have used computers.

Below are some negative effects of technology and the Internet which has contributed negatively
in students’ lives:

1>Technology kills creativity – Many students do not believe in personal creativity anymore
because google can solve all issues. This promotes laziness and less development in critical
thinking, which gives success in life.

2> Individual social skills are affected by technology – Most students take technological gadgets
as a companion and do not interact physically. This affects and reduces their social skills as a
physical relationship is key to socialization.

3> Technology gadgets distract students’ attention – When students use technology to study,
they can be easily distracted by feeds and notifications that pop out regularly. Around the world
students are using modern technology gadgets for studying. And most students divert their
attention to social media, which disturbs their learning attention.

4> Wrong information misguides the students – Most website owners only want traffic on their
website or blog, so they give pieces of information that could misguide students. This unverified
information gives students wrong ideas which affect their education.

5> E-books replacing physical books – When making use of content written online, it is called E-
book. This has replaced physical textbooks. When a student’s computer does not support the
version of the e-book, such students might be restricted to get the physical book. This can affect
the learning process.

6> Extinction of good handwriting – Most students now rely on typing on the computer without
putting any effort into their handwriting. This practice has reduced the use of the pen and paper
to write notes or get their assignment done. Handwriting is now less important and making it
legible is no more priority which is a major disadvantage.

7> Technology causes mental and cognitive disorders – Many times, students who engage in so
much usage of technological gadgets tend to suffer some mental and cognitive disorders. This
abuse can make them get addicted to internet usage, and cause digital dementia, depression and
obsessive-compulsive disorders. All this affects mental well-being over time and if not checked
can cause further damage to students’ future.

8> Physical health effects – Continuous usage of computers causes some physical disorders like
eye strain, bad posture and sleeplessness. When a person sits before a laptop or computer for a
long time, it means he or she will resolve to take snacks, stay awake more at night, and do less
exercise. This can result in diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases.
9> Cyberbullying – When exposed too much to the internet, it can lead to cyberbullying.
Teenagers who are vulnerable to get abused by people who use the Internet to send messages
containing inappropriate content make children exposed and put them in danger.

10> Lack of attention – There are hundreds and thousands of videos available on the Internet
which are infused with very high graphics and attraction-seeking background music that
students can’t seem to get their eyes off the screen for as long as the video lasts. This results in
the lack of attention in class and reduces the attention span when it comes to learning or listening
to the teachers as students don’t find the same level of interesting content which can be found on
the web world. Another serious problem here is continuous texting or posting on Snapchat,
Instagram or Twitter rather than paying attention to the class.

It is worthy to note that students who spend hours and hours surfing on the Internet, playing
video games, watching Netflix and other engaging tasks on social networks tend to hurt their
physical development more than the students who don’t. Engaging in such activities can result
in drastic hindrance on their physical development due to lack of regular exercise. Students
should be given an opportunity either in schools or at home to engage in physical activity.

All these problems or adverse effects must be checked by parents or guidance to make the
child a better person. By putting in some checks and balances, parents can make use of a control
app which can assist in safeguarding, protecting and controlling usage of the technological
gadgets. If the student / child is in possession of gadgets that help them connect to the Internet
whenever they want, the parents, teachers or guardians should be aware of the above mentioned
negative effects. As a parent, they can surely exercise control over the child’s internet usage for
the sake of their physical and mental health. If the parents suspect that the child is an internet
addict, it is advised to seek help from a counselor or a psychologist at the earliest. In conclusion,
to mitigate the negative effects, it is important for parents, teachers and educators to instill
religious and moral values, provide guidance and promote responsible internet use.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE INTERNET & THE WORLD WIDE WEB

The terms “Internet” and “World Wide Web” (WWW) are often used as synonyms, but
technically they are not the same things. In simple terms, the meaning of the internet is that it is a
global network of interconnected computers and networks. The World Wide Web is a service
that uses the Internet’s infrastructure to provide digital devices and applications with access to
websites. Popular internet services include email, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), and Short
Message Service (SMS). These services leverage the Internet’s connectivity to facilitate
communication and collaboration among users worldwide.

WWW or web is one of the key services offered by the Internet. The World Wide Web, or
simply “web”, is the term for the collection of web pages that we view on our computer or
