B. Finding the equation of a line
given its slope and a point.
What is the point-slope form of a line?
𝑦2 −𝑦1
Recall 𝑚 =
𝑥2 −𝑥1
𝑦2 −𝑦1
=𝑚
𝑥2 −𝑥1
Multiply both sides by 𝑥2 − 𝑥1
𝑦2 −𝑦1 = 𝑚(𝑥2 − 𝑥1 )
Let 𝑦2 = 𝑦 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥2 = 𝑥, then substitute
𝑦 − 𝑦1 = 𝑚(𝑥 − 𝑥1 )
This is called the Point-Slope Form of the equation of a line
This is used to find the equation of a line in standard or
slope-intercept form when the slope and a point is given.
6. Find the equation of the line with a slope of 3
and passing through the point (1, -2).
Solution:
Recall 𝑦 − 𝑦1 = 𝑚(𝑥 − 𝑥1 )
Where:
𝑚 = 3, 𝑥1 = 1, 𝑦1 = −2. 𝑦 = 3𝑥 − 3 − 2
Substitute and simplify 𝑦 = 3𝑥 − 5
𝑦 − (−2) = 3 𝑥 − 1 or
𝑦+2=3 𝑥−1 −3𝑥 + 𝑦 = −5
𝑦 + 2 = 3𝑥 − 3 3𝑥 − 𝑦 = 5
Practice Exercise:
1.Find the equation of the line with a slope of -4
and passing through the point (-2, 3).
Solution:
Recall 𝑦 − 𝑦1 = 𝑚(𝑥 − 𝑥1 ) 𝑦 − 3 = −4𝑥 − 8
Where: 𝑦 = −4𝑥 − 8 + 3
𝑚 = −4, 𝑥1 = −2, 𝑦1 = 3 𝑦 = −4𝑥 − 5
Substitute or
𝑦 − 3 = −4 𝑥 − −2 4𝑥 + 𝑦 = −5
𝑦 − 3 = −4 𝑥 + 2
