PRE- REQUISITE: Basic knowledge of digital electronics, basic microprocessor architecture and
programming.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify the requirement of power efficient processors.
2. Explore and compare architectures of different embedded system processors.
3. Explain the various communication protocols and peripheral interfacing schemes
4. Develop hardware software design to provide an efficient solution to real world problems.

COURSE OUTCOMES: : After completing this course students will able to:

EE42***(T).1: Explore Understanding the basic principles of Microcontroller based design and
development.
EE42***(T).2: Identify and design communication protocol, programming model and memory
interfacing for low power processors.
EE42***(T)3: Explain architecture of ARM processors and design hardware and software model
with ARM architectures.
EE42***(T).4: Design real world real time solutions of embedded system with low power architectures.
EE42***(T).5: To give practical examples of DSP Processor architectures for better understanding.

COURSE CONTENTS:

THEORY:
UNIT-1 Comparison of microprocessors and microcontrollers - 8051 architecture, ports, memory,
Programming of 8051: Addressing modes, I/O Programming. counters/timers programming, serial I/O,
interrupts.

UNIT-2: Introduction to MSP430 microcontrollers – Features, Variants and Part numbering , Block
diagram of MSP430, Memory organization of MSP430, CPU architecture and Registers of MSP430,
UNIT-3 Addressing modes of MSP430, Instruction formats and Timings of MSP430, Instruction set of
MSP430, Sample Embedded system using MSP430.

UNIT-4 ARM Design Philosophy, Registers, Program Status Register, Instruction Pipeline, Architecture,
ARM Processor Families. ARM programming model, Instruction set, Thumb Instruction set.

UNIT-5 Basic Architectural features of DSP, Computational building Blocks, Bus Architecture, Memory,
Data Addressing Capabilities, Address Generation unit, Programmability, features for External
interfacing, DSP Processors application in electrical engg.
