LU I, Summarization of Data

1. A survey to learn how much time Master level students use

social sites such as facebook, tiktok, twitters, instagram etc. On
the questions asked, “How many hours do you surf Social Sites in
a week?” A survey on forty eight students revealed the following
data:
58 13 63 22 63 59 87 86 77 56 44 32
60 69 94 66 81 38 43 103 64 28 54 58
52 30 49 50 52 96 16 26 44 48 68 70
18 36 48 40 48 54 55 59 69 62 91 37
a. Form stem and leaf display of the given data set and
interpret the result.
b. Construct a grouped frequency distribution having seven
classes of equal width starting from the smallest value to the
given data above.
c. Find five number summaries from the grouped frequency
distribution constructed in (a), draw a box and whisker plot
and state the shape of the distribution.
d. Find the mean and standard deviation of the grouped
frequency distribution prepared in (a).
e. Prepare a cumulative frequency curve and find the minimum
hours used by the top 15% users.
f. Another survey on Bachelor level students on the same
topic, the mean and standard deviation of hours students
used social sites per week is found to be 56 hours and 20
hours respectively. Compare in which program the students
are more consistent over using social sites in a week
2. One group is investigating the price of condominiums for a given
size (sq ft). The following sales prices ($1,000) were obtained in
one region of a city.
212 239 240 218 222 249 265 224 255 226
257 271 266 234 239 219 255 260 273 220
243 261 249 230 246 263 235 229 226 239
218 238 254 249 250 263 229 221 258 259
253 227 270 257 261 238 240 239 230 262

a. Prepare stem-leaf plot the data.
b. Classify these data sets in six class of equal width and
counts the observations within these classes and construct
relative frequency distribution.
c. Construct histogram and frequency curve. What conclusion
can draw from histogram?
d. Prepare a box and whisker plot and describe nature of
distribution
e. Calculate mean and standard deviation and interpret these
measures.
f. Detect the outlier if any.
3. The President of Ocean Airlines is trying to estimate when the
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is most likely to rule on
the company’s application for a new flight between Charlotte
and Nashville. Assistants to the president have assembled the
following waiting times for applications field during the past
year. The data are given in days from the date of application until
an FAA ruling.
14 40 13 48 31 40 25 33 62 12
44 34 68 11 33 42 26 55 47 11
29 40 41 30 34 31 64 35 57 63
44 44 17 52 32 36 34 53 41 39
29 22 28 44 51 31 44 28 56 53
a. Arrange above data in ascending order by preparing stem
and leaf display.
b. Construct a frequency distribution using 6 intervals of
equally spaced. Also construct histogram and comment on
the shape of the distribution.
c. Construct a box and whisker plot from group data set
prepared in (ii) and then describe nature of the distribution
of data points.
d. Compute the mean and coefficient of the variation from
group data prepared in (ii).
e. Detect the outlier if any using exploratory data analysis.
