Prep Two Bed in summer Poetry

By : - Robert Louis Stevenson ( 1850 – 1894 )

First Stanza :-
In winter I get up at night

And dress by yellow candle- light

In summer , quite the other way

I have to go to bed by day .

Rhyme Scheme : ( aa , bb )
Paraphrase : - In this stanza , the poet complains that in winter he gets up early as it
still dark he puts on his clothes with the help of the candle-light . In summer, he goes to bed

while the sun is still shinning as the sun sets very late in summer .

Figure of speech : -
1- Contrast : ( summer – winter ) ( day – night ) ( get up at night – go to bed by day )

Contrast makes the meaning more clear .

Second Stanza : -
I have to go to bed and see

The birds still hopping on the tree

Or hear the grown-up people’s feet

Still going past me in the street

Rhyme Scheme : ( aa , bb )
Paraphrase : - In this stanza , the poet informs us that he stays aware in his bed as he
can see the birds that jump , leap and sing on the trees and the people who are grown up

Still walk ( come and go ) in the street .

Figure of speech : - 1- ( have to go to bed ) anaphora
The poet complains about things he is forced to do by the grown-ups .

2- Alliteration : ( still – street ) the repetition of / s/ gives musical effect.

Third Stanza : -
And does it not seem hard to you

When all the sky is clear and blue

And I should like so much to play

To have to go to bed by day

Rhyme Scheme : ( aa , bb )
Paraphrase : - The poet is asking if it hard or not when the weather is fine with the
clear blue sky and he wants so much to play but he has to go to bed by day .

Figure of speech : - " And does it not seem hard to you "

Rhetorical question : - The poet is asking this question not for etting an answer

but to get the reader sympahty and to show how difficult it’s to go to bed during

the day .

With my best wishes
