NADNADEN, FORUM 1.
Being
a criminologist, I would advocate for a mixed approach of involving community,
situational crime prevention, effective criminal justice policies and international
cooperation. Below is a thorough discussion of these measures, supported by relevant
studies.
1. Programs for prevention based on the community.
Community-led initiatives are actually deemed important in preventing terrorism, as
these address the root causes of radicalization. Such initiatives advocate the need to
tackle and involve different stakeholders, including local police, mental health providers,
or schools, in the process - a "whole-of-society" approach. These initiatives are known
to prevent terrorism and build resilience and social cohesion in the community. For
example, while evaluation of community-based programs have also brought more
expansive social benefits, for example, stronger liaison between the police and
residents of the community.
2. SCP is a preventive measure against crime by focusing on the situation.
It must be applied to terrorism since its purpose is not to prevent the incidence of
terrorism but rather alter the circumstances in which it would take place.
Literature reviews have suggested that implementing SCP means can
significantly reduce the risk of terrorist attacks by making the potential targets less
accessible or increasing the difficulty level in approaching them.
3. Effective methods of combating crime offenses
An effective criminal justice system is a must in the fight against terrorism. Such a
system includes a strict law on anti-terrorism but also must ensure that such laws
respect human rights and due process of the law.
Research proves that it is through adequately funded and organized criminal
justice approaches that help prevent terrorist acts with a continued upholding of legal
order.
4. Cooperation on a global scale.
Better prevention and response against international terrorism require international
cooperation.
International legal frameworks established by organizations like the United
Nations and the Council of Europe have presented guidelines for international
cooperation against terrorism. This has helped in the pursuit of trans-border terrorists
with the added advantage of preventing them from being able to find safe haven.
As such, comprehensive anti-terrorism efforts include engaging communities;
preventing situational crimes; enforcing effective criminal justice measures; and
international cooperation. Such measures can create a resilient society that is relatively
more resistant to radicalization and terrorist threats, able to neutralize the
aforementioned dangers. The studies above also emphasize the importance of a total
strategy in avoiding the dangers facing society today as it creates long-term stability
within society.
