Peking University Chinese Language Summer School 2023

01 Program Introduction
Peking University Chinese Language Summer School was founded in the 1980s. It is committed to providing overseas

students with a diversified platform to enter Peking University, learn Chinese, and understand China. With its long

history of running the school, high-quality teaching system, and extensive and in-depth Chinese-foreign cultural ex-

change events and rich and varied field trips and hands-on activities, the summer school has attracted the attention and

favor of more and more international students. Every year, there are about 300 overseas students from more than 30

countries participating in the program. The program offers four-week (one in July and one in August), six-week and

eight-week Chinese courses, which are divided into three levels: elementary, intermediate and advanced. At the same

time, it offers a series of lectures on China's national conditions and Chinese culture (taught in English), and organizes

cultural visits and exchanges between Chinese and international students.

02 Program Courses and Activities Arrangements

A. Course Arrangement

1. Course type: Comprehensive Chinese course, HSK4-6 Training Course, Advanced Business Chinese Course.

2. Class mode: Offline classes on campus at Peking University.

3. Class hours: Monday to Friday(8:00-12:00), four hours per day.

B. Introduction to the Courses (The textbooks are written by Peking University)

I. Comprehensive Chinese Course

1. Course content:

1) Intensive Chinese Reading: The aim of Intensive Chinese Reading is to improve the students' reading and

writing skills by learning vocabulary and grammar.

2) Spoken Chinese: The aim of Spoken Chinese is to enhance the proficiency of oral communication by learn-

ing common vocabularies and sentences.

2. Applicable Language Level:

Basic Class

Mainly for students with zero Chinese ability, or at the stage of learning Pinyin, common Chinese characters

and simple Chinese words and sentences.

Elementary Class

For those who have vocabulary skill of more than 200 Chinese words. The class mainly teaches basic grammar

and daily expressions.

Intermediate Class

For those who have vocabulary skill of more than 1200 Chinese words. The course aims to allow students to

use Chinese in daily lives, studies and work.

Advanced Class

For those who have vocabulary skill of more than 2500 Chinese words. The course aims to enable students to

discuss and communicate their ideas on general social topics.

II. Advanced Business Chinese

1. Course content:

1) These are special courses that are tailored for the business and workplace fields.

2) Course content includes company introductions, corporate team training, corporate investment promotion,

banking business, and practical vocabularies, sentences and topics that can be used in business and work

scenarios.

2. Applicable Language Level: For those who have vocabulary skill of more than 1200 Chinese words. The

course aims to allow students to use Chinese in daily lives, studies and work.

III. HSK Training Course

1. Course content:

1) HSK is an international standardized exam that tests Chinese language proficiency.

2) The HSK Training Course is a thematic course that is tailored towards HSK intermediate and advanced

exam preparation.

2. Applicable Language Level: There are 3 levels in this course, namely: HSK (Level 4) Course, HSK (Level 5)

Course, HSK (Level 6) Course.

C. Course requirements

The Chinese online summer classes are taught in small classes, each with about 15 students. Classes of the same level

with fewer than 8 students will be canceled, in which case, students must choose other courses.

D. ‘Dialogue with Experts’ English language lecture series

Do you want to meet and talk with the experts in China Studies? Do you want to learn more about Chinese history and

culture? Do you want to get some tips on mastering Chinese?

If so, “Dialogue with Experts,” English language lecture series is for you. This summer, the series of lectures will invite

renowned professors of Peking University to offer eight wonderful English lectures from July to August. Most of the

lecturers and professors have been engaged in the related teaching, scientific research and management for a long time.

They have rich teaching experience and cultural exchange experience from the East and the West, and have made great

achievements in cross-cultural communication and other fields. We believe that, attending these lectures, you can make

friends from all over the world, broaden your international horizons, and gain insights.

1. Lecture duration: Lectures will be held once per week and last 1.5 hours each. Announcement of the lecture

series schedule will be made after the program orientation.

2. Lecture topics: Lecture topics will cover content such as Chinese history and culture, language learning meth-

ods, international relations, and finance and economy.

3. Lecture language: English

4. Lecture Certificate: Students who attend more than 75% of the lecture series will receive a certificate of at-

tendance.

E. Transcript & Certificate

1. Students should not come late, leave early or be absent from classes.

2. Students should ask for leave when they are unable to attend classes for any reason.

3. If a student comes late or leaves early 3 times will be considered as one-time absence, which will lead to a

deduction of 1 point for the exam, except for those who have asked for sick leave and have presented a doctor’s

note. Those who ask for a sick leave without a doctor’s note will be considered as taking a personal leave. A

personal leave (i.e., being absent for 2 class hours), will result in a loss in grade by 0.5 point for the exam.

4. In principle, those who have accumulated absences totaling one fourth or more of the total number of class

hours, will be unable to obtain a grade for the course.

5. The overall course grade will be based upon 3 components: score on the course completion exam, scores on

regular assignments and tests, and attendance.

6. Students will be offered an official transcript and a Short Overseas Exchange Program of Peking University

course completion certificate.

03 Extracurricular Activities
Peking University Chinese Language Summer School offers program students a series of extracurricular activities to

experience Chinese culture and get a deeper understanding of China. The following activities are currently planned but

are subject to change.

04 Visa, Insurance and accommodation

A. Requirements for arriving to school:

1. Students who have a negative nucleic acid test within 48 hours before entry can report offline.

2. Students must strictly abide by the school rules and disciplines and other relevant regulations during their studies

on campus.

B. Visa and insurance

1. Visa: Students should hold a valid X2 visa during their studies at the school. Students must enter China with a

study visa or a permanent residence permit, and ensure that their stay certificates are valid during their stay in

China. Insurance: International students must purchase insurance according to relevant national regulations

and school requirements. Students must purchase insurance in China before the program starts or within the

specified period.

C. On-campus accommodation

Peking University provides a small number of international student apartments for students to apply on a first

come, first served basis. The accommodation cost is 140 yuan per person per night. If the on-campus accommo-

dation is full, students can choose to stay in PKU Changping Campus or need to find off-campus accommodation

by themselves. Students living outside the school shall go to the local police station for accommodation registra-

tion within 24 hours after arriving at the accommodation address. When reporting to the school, you must submit

the detailed address and telephone number of your residence.

05 Application

A. Application Requirements

• Be a non-Chinese citizen;

• Be between 18 and 50 years of age (inclusive);

• Have a high school diploma or above;

• Be in good health, friendly to China and have no criminal record.

B. Application Period

Applications will open on December 1st, 2022. For courses starting on July 3, 2023 will stop accepting applica-

tions at 24:00 on June 15, 2023. Course starting on July 31 will stop accepting applications at 24:00 on July 13,

2023. The number of admissions is limited, and admissions will be based on merit until the quota is full. (The

above date and times are all Beijing time.)

C. Application Documents (submit scanned copies online)

• Photocopy of your passport information page.

• Certificate of your highest academic achievement, for example a diploma or degree, or proof of enrollment at

your current educational institution in either English or Chinese

• One copy of reference letter in either English or Chinese.

• HSK Certificate or official transcripts of full-time Mandarin training (if applicable).

D. Application Process:

Chinese Language Proficiency Evaluation:

We will evaluate each student’s Chinese proficiency based on the results of the online Chinese proficiency test and

allocate students into classes based on their level. The specific test method will be announced by email after admission.

Please complete the online Chinese proficiency test within one week after receiving the email. Students of the Advanced

Business Chinese course and HSK courses do not need to take the online Chinese proficiency test; however, all other

students must complete the test within that one week.

06 Payment & Refund Policy

A. Fees (RMB / yuan)

1. Application Fee (non-refundable): ¥400

2. Tuition Fee (including fees for electronic textbooks):

4-week Comprehensive Chinese A Program: ¥8,000

4-week Comprehensive Chinese B Program: ¥8,000

Advanced Business Chinese Program: ¥10,000

HSK 4-6 Training Course Program: ¥10,000

8-week Comprehensive Chinese Program: ¥12,000

3. Payment method: Online payment (applicants will receive an electronic receipt after the payment).

B. Refund Policy

1. For courses starting on July 3:

On or before April 30, 2023: 50% refund of tuition fees.

Between April 30 – May 30, 2023: 25% refund of tuition fees.

On May 31, 2023 or later: no refund.

2. For course starting on July 31:

On or before May 31, 2023: 50% refund of tuition fees.

Between May 31 –June 30, 2023: 25% refund of tuition fees.

On July 1, 2023 or later: no refund.

07 Special Note

Peking University Chinese Summer School 2023 will still award the title of “The Star of China” to the students with

great academic progress, outstanding performance and excellent achievements during the semester (the specific

measures will be notified in detail after the course starts. Please stay tuned).

We will officially resume offline courses from 2023, and we would like to thank the students who have insisted on taking

online courses since 2020, and thank you for your strong support and trust to our Peking University Chinese Summer

School! Here, we would like to invite students who have attended our online courses from 2020 to 2022 to sign up for
