In analyzing a word group in a sentence, the first


question that one should ask for himself is; Is my
word group a phrase or a clause? Second, how
will I know that my group of word is a sentence?

What is a clause?
A clause is a group of words that makes complete
sense. A clause must have a subject and a verb.

What is phrase?
A phrase is a group of words that makes some sense
but not complete sense. A phrase does not have a
subject or verb.

What is a sentence?
A sentence is a unit of expression that can stand alone
Grammatically. It must contain a subject and a
predicate.

ACTIVITY 2

Clauses and phrases are the building blocks of sentences. Every


sentence must have at least one clause to be considered
grammatically correct. Understanding how clauses and phrases
work will help you better understand sentence structure.

List down at least 3 examples of a clause and a

Every sentence has two main parts: a simple subject and a simple
predicate.
The simple subject of a sentence is the main word in the complete
subject. It is always a noun or pronoun. Sometimes, the simple
subject is also the complete subject.
The simple predicate is the complete verb within the complete
predicate. The simple predicate may be one or more words.

Draw a line between the complete subject and the complete


predicate in the following sentences. Then underline the simple
subject and draw a box around the simple predicate.
