What is the course about?

‘Academic skills’…..OBVIOUSLY….!

But what are those?

How are they different to ‘non-academic’ skills?

Will these skills you look at/acquire/develop be useful to you

outside of Uni?

Does that depend on what you end up doing afterwards?

‘Academic Skills’ vs ‘Graduate Attributes’

‘Academic Skills’ = Graduate Attributes?

What are those….?

What are ‘Graduate Attributes’?
What do employers look for? Pt 1

“When it comes to recruiting graduates, attitudes and aptitudes are

often seen as more important than formal qualifications”

“Although technical and basic skills are required to get past the
initial application stage, other aspects such as personal qualities,
attitudes, and general aptitudes are then seen as far more critical”.

(UCAS)
What do employers look for? – Pt 2

“Resilience is frequently cited by employers as an essential quality

for young people to possess – the ability to cope with setbacks
and criticism, be motivated to overcome obstacles, and stay calm
under pressure.”
(UCAS)
What do employers look for? – Pt 3

“A positive attitude to work, punctuality, flexibility, verbal

communication skills, and the ability to make a professional
introduction are all crucial when deciding whether to recruit a
young person”.

(UCAS)
What do employers look for? – Pt 4

Demonstrate an ability to do what you’ve been told to do, and do

it in the way you’ve been shown

(Me….)

FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS
▪ Course Learning Objectives
On completion of this course, you will be able to:

Identify and locate appropriate sources of information

Cite and reference those sources correctly
Take notes effectively and efficiently in various contexts
Write using an appropriately scholarly style, avoiding
plagiarism
Understand the difference between descriptive writing and
critical writing
Understand what feedback is, how it is used, and how you can
benefit from it
In class discussions

• We will have whole class discussions on topics based on

reading and things you have found outside of class

• If you are a big personality who likes to get your

comments in…this is much appreciated! But please be
mindful of others who may be struggling to get their
points across.
‘Scientific Thinking’

Scientific Thinking has 4 stages:

Inquiry – the question

Analysis – what ‘evidence’ is there?

Inference – based on the evidence, the answer

is______

Argument – where you tell others what the answer is

and why that’s the answer (and not something else)
Why all these endless essays?

• A University degree is about ‘transferable skills’…so even if

you have no interest in becoming a psychologist this degree
is still training you for your future career
• Job descriptions often include statements like:
• ‘handling data information: collecting and/or storing
information’
• ‘analyzing and problem-solving: finding and comparing
information from various sources, identifying issues and
relationships, making overall review reports and
recommendations’
• ‘understanding a problem and formulating an appropriate
research question’
Library resources

• Why use the library? With Google and Wikipedia so easy to

use and covering almost anything you ever wanted to know
on any topic…why do we bother with the library?

• HWU spends 1.3millionGBP on resources for students!

• And most of that is electronic sources you do have access
to (without having to set foot in the library!)
Why literature search skills? (more in Module 3)

• Searching for information for essays and projects should be

planned and structured

• Students complain they can’t find anything on a

topic…usually because they are not searching
correctly…there is always lots on every topic!

• Knowing how to identify what is relevant even when the

topic words are not in the title of the article/book

• Evaluating your web searches for what is likely to be valid

information and what is not valid
What’s available online?

• ~ 40,000 eBooks
• ~ 19,000 eJournals
• Online catalogue
• Millions of journal articles
• 100s of search tools
• Discovery single search service
• 24/7 access
• HWU ID
• www.hw.ac.uk/is
Textbooks
• Introduction to topic /overview /key concepts
• Authoritative
subject experts
specialist publishers e.g. Elsevier, Springer, Wiley
editorial process
• Accessible writing style
• Publication delay
Journals
• Up-to-date / articles

research
How to use the library properly
✓Campus Library:
✓Useful for textbooks
✓Print journals (?)

✓Use the library catalogue for most journal articles and to find
ebooks:

✓Tells you what all books we have in psychology so if you
don’t see it on the shelf, you can ask the counter staff.
