Good morning, ladies and gentlemen ! Very warm greetings to each and every one of you.
Welcome to the Seminar on “Technology Developments & Growth Scenario in Chlor- Alkali
Industry (Global and Indian Perspective)” organised by Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers,
Northern Regional Centre (IIChE-NRC).
IIChE-NRC is one of the most active regional centers of IIChE, committed to creating synergy
between industry and academia. With six student chapters in its jurisdiction, IIChE-NRC
promotes chemical engineering mainly through funding research projects, scholarships and
awards, lecture series and seminars as well as industrial visits.
My name is XXX XXX and I along with my colleague XXX XXX will be your hosts for the event.

On behalf of the organising committee, we deeply appreciate your presence here.

To begin our proceedings, we will have the traditional lamp lighting ceremony. We have an
esteemed gathering amongst us. May I invite the dignitaries on the dais and members of the

to connect over some refreshments. We’re all set to dive into the first technical session
of our seminar, titled “Market Scenario and Technology Developments”

This session will be chaired by the esteemed Dr R.P.S. Chauhan. We are honoured
to have him lead us through this discussion. May I kindly request Dr Chauhan to

I would also like to invite Mr. Vinod Trivedi to join us on stage and introduce Dr
Chauhan to the audience.

Dr Chauhan comes to the dais and is introduced by Mr. Trivedi


Dr Chauhan currently serves as Senior Vice President and Unit Head at Shriram Alkali
& Chemicals, Bharuch which is India’s largest single location Chlor-Alkali plant

 He brings over 42 years of extensive experience in chemical manufacturing,


specifically in Chlor-Alkali Industries.
 He holds a doctorate degree from Agra University.
 Since joining DCM Shriram Ltd. in 1996, Dr. Chauhan has held pivotal roles in
their Kota and Bharuch plants.
 Dr. Chauhan’s expertise spans site management, technical services, maintenance
engineering, project management, production and business development.
 Under his leadership, DCM Shriram Ltd. has received numerous honors, including
state and national awards for safety, environmental initiatives, energy
conservation, and sustainability.
I now invite Dr. Chauhan to take the stage and lead us through the technical session
“Market Scenario and Technology Developments”.

Welcome back ladies and gentlemen. We move on to the 2nd technical session of the
seminar “Technology Developments – Efficiency and Purification”

The session will be chaired by Mr Vivek Bhide. May I request Mr. Bhide to please come
to the dais. I also request Dr. S. Nand (former Chairman IIChE NRC, and former
Additional Director General, Fertilizer Association of India, to come to the dais and
introduce Dr Chauhan.
Mr. Bhide comes to the dais and is introduced by Dr. Nand
Mr. Bhide has nearly four decades of experience in the chemical industry and has a
versatile experience in Chlor-Alkali, Agrochemicals and Specialty Chemicals in
Operations, Projects and P&L role.

 He was part of the commissioning team for the first membrane technology plant
up in September 1994.
 He was part of the successful completion of two phases of green field projects of
UPL plant in Gujarat. He headed the Pesticide plant at UPL Ankleshwar, and later
as Unit head and then the projects lead.
 Mr. Bhide commissioned two brownfield projects for Kanoria Chemicals Renukoot,
Uttar Pradesh. He headed the Formaldehyde and Hexamine projects for Kanoria
Chemicals at Vizag
 He headed the Grasim Vilayat greenfield project as project Manager.
 He headed the chlor-alkali plant, 60 MW power plant, and chlorine derivative
plants at Grasim, Jharkhand Unit, and capacity expansion of 250 TPD brownfield
plant
 Mr Bhide headed the largest complex of Grasim Chlor-alkali division at Vilayat,
Gujarat.
 Currently heading the Technology and Central Technical services for all 8 plants
under Grasim Chemical Division, based out of Mumbai.

enjoyed the delightful lunch, featuring a blend of Indian and Oriental flavors—just the
right fuel to energize us for the final part of today’s program.

As sage Yajnavalkya highlights universal well-being in his shloka:

"सर्वे भर्वन्तु सुखिनः , सर्वे सन्तु ननरामयाः ।


सर्वे भद्रानि पश्यन्तु, मा कनिद् दु ः िभाग् भर्वेत्॥"

Sarve bhavantu sukhinah, sarve santu niraamayaah;


Sarve bhadraani pashyantu, maa kashchit dukha bhaag bhavet.

Meaning:
"May all beings be happy, may all be healthy and free from illness. May everyone
experience prosperity, and may no one suffer in any way."

This shloka beautifully reflects the values of compassion and inclusivity that are at the
heart of India's philosophy. As a country rooted in the ideology of selfless service
(paropkar), India has long upheld the belief that knowledge and progress should
benefit all.

Keeping this in mind. We now move on to the last and highly anticipated technical
session of the seminar, titled 'Innovations, AI Applications, and Sustainability.' This
session will be chaired by Mr. Sridhara Narasimha Sastry, a highly respected figure in
the industry.

May I kindly invite Mr. Sastry to take the dais. Additionally, I would like to request Mr.
Subhash Tandon, Executive Member of IIChE NCR and former Executive Vice
President of DCW, to join us and introduce Dr. Chauhan.
Mr. Sastri comes to the dais and is introduced by Mr.Tandon
Mr. Sastri is the President & Unit Head – Grasim Industries Limited (Chemical Division)
Balabhadrapuram, Andhra Pradesh.

 Mr. Sastry is a postgraduate in Psychology, Science, and Business Management.


He has Done a course in Global Strategy from Harward Business School

 Mr Sastry has over 37 years of industrial experience, and has led an integrated
Chemical complex of Chlor-Alkali products in the Aditya Birla Group,
demonstrating a deep understanding of the industry.

 He has held leadership roles and provided coaching in ESG and manufacturing,
QMS/QA, Projects, and Technical Services, inspiring and guiding teams towards
excellence.
 Mr. Sastry has extensive experience in Integrated Management systems
consisting of Quality, environmental, Safety, Energy, Information Security, Social
accountability and Asset Management
 Mr. Sastry has visited the USA, Japan, Germany, Thailand, and Indonesia for
various technical and leadership conferences, gaining a global perspective and
fostering international connections.
