Superlatives
Superlatives
Superlatives are used to express the highest degree of a quality among three or more items. In French, superlatives can be used with adjectives,
adverbs, and nouns. They indicate that something is "the most" or "the least" of a certain quality.
To form the superlative with adjectives, you use the definite article (le, la, les) followed by plus or moins and the adjective.
Elle est la plus intelligente de la classe. (She is the most intelligent in the class.)
C’est le plus grand bâtiment de la ville. (It is the tallest building in the city.)
Il est le moins rapide de l’équipe. (He is the least fast in the team.)
C’est la moins chère des voitures. (It is the least expensive car.)
To form the superlative with adverbs, use le followed by plus or moins and the adverb. Note that adverbs do not change for gender or number.
To form the superlative with nouns, use le plus de or le moins de followed by the noun.
Elle a le plus de livres dans la classe. (She has the most books in the class.)
Il a le plus d’amis. (He has the most friends.)
Il a le moins de patience. (He has the least patience.)
Elle a le moins d’expérience. (She has the least experience.)
