Superlatives

Superlatives are used to express the highest degree of a quality among three or more items. In French, superlatives can be used with adjectives,
adverbs, and nouns. They indicate that something is "the most" or "the least" of a certain quality.

Superlatives with Adjectives

To form the superlative with adjectives, you use the definite article (le, la, les) followed by plus or moins and the adjective.

Structure: le/la/les + plus/moins + adjective

Elle est la plus intelligente de la classe. (She is the most intelligent in the class.)
C’est le plus grand bâtiment de la ville. (It is the tallest building in the city.)
Il est le moins rapide de l’équipe. (He is the least fast in the team.)
C’est la moins chère des voitures. (It is the least expensive car.)

Superlatives with Adverbs

To form the superlative with adverbs, use le followed by plus or moins and the adverb. Note that adverbs do not change for gender or number.

Structure: le + plus/moins + adverb

Il court le plus vite. (He runs the fastest.)

Elle parle le plus clairement. (She speaks the most clearly.)
Il répond le moins rapidement. (He answers the least quickly.)
Elle travaille le moins efficacement. (She works the least efficiently.)

Superlatives with Nouns

To form the superlative with nouns, use le plus de or le moins de followed by the noun.

Structure: le plus/moins de + noun

Elle a le plus de livres dans la classe. (She has the most books in the class.)
Il a le plus d’amis. (He has the most friends.)
Il a le moins de patience. (He has the least patience.)
Elle a le moins d’expérience. (She has the least experience.)

Irregular Superlatives

Some adjectives and adverbs have irregular superlative forms:

Bon (good) → le meilleur/la meilleure/les meilleurs/les meilleures (the best)

C’est le meilleur restaurant de la ville. (It is the best restaurant in the city.)

Mauvais (bad) → le pire/la pire/les pires (the worst)

C’est la pire décision. (It is the worst decision.)

Bien (well) → le mieux (the best)

Elle chante le mieux. (She sings the best.)

Mal (badly) → le pire (the worst)

Il parle le pire. (He speaks the worst.)
