PASSAGE STRUCTURE QUESTIONS

Learning objectives

1) What do these questions test?

2) How do I come up with these questions?

3) What skills do I need to master such questions?

4) What can be typical incorrect answer choices (Answer choice analysis)?

1. What do these questions test?

An ability to identify the manner in which the passage is put together or

organized.

They are global in nature.

2. How do I come up with these questions?

2.1.1 (Prethinking)
1. (1) - Sum up the gist of - the topic(s) of each paragraph and what the
author is doing with it (them) - Pay attention signal words while reading
and summarizing.
2. (2) - Briefly paraphrase gist of each paragraphs in your own words during
the initial reading;
3. (3)Repeat them one more time before diving into choices.
4. Recall Topic, Scope, M. Point and Tone.
2.1.2 Come with a rough answer choice and start analyzing choices
2.1.3 Eliminate Incorrect choices according to their types: Inconsistent; Out
of scope
2.1.4 Stick to your guns. Be bold. When you’ve found the likely answer,
“I’ll bet this is the right one, this has to be
boldly assert,
the right one; let me check to make sure that the other four are as
poor as they’re supposed to be. When you find a choice that echoes
what you’ve pre- phrased as the likely answer, don’t react with a
wimpy “Gee, it could be this one; I hope it’s the one.” Those phrases
“could be” and “I hope” show weak will: They will send you to
approachs the other choices with fear and respect, and you’ll waste time
and, quite often, end up picking a wrong answer. Instead, when you’ve
found the likely answer, boldly assert, “I’ll bet this is the right
one, this has to be the right one ; let me check to make sure that
the other four are as poor as they’re supposed to be.” Remember, there’s
always one right answer and four terrible ones. Accept no substitutes! –
