Science Literature

Kevin William Andri Siahaan1 , Hisar Marulitua Manurung2 , Mungkap Mangapul Siahaan3

Abstract:

This study aims to develop appropriate android-based learning media to improve students' scientific
literacy. This study uses the Four D model procedure. In addition to developing android-based media,
this research also develops a syllabus, lesson plans, and scientific literacy instruments. This research was
conducted in one of the Surya Private Junior High Schools in Pematangsiantar City. The validation of
android-based learning media was carried out by three validators of media experts and material experts.
Expert validation data analysis was carried out using the Pearson validation formula. The feasibility study
of android-based learning products shows validity of 85% with very valid criteria. The results of the
media feasibility study obtained an average score of 90%. The syllabus obtained an average score of
84%, lesson plans obtained an average score of 84%, and scientific literacy instruments obtained an
average score of 85%. In conclusion, android-based media products on natural science material are
feasible to be implemented in learning, especially during the covid-19 pandemic.

A Literature Review on Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Teaching and Learning
Sumitra Pokhrel, Phuentsholing Higher Secondary School, Ministry of Education, Phuentsholing
450, Bhutan.
Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has created the largest disruption of education systems in human
history, affecting nearly 1.6 billion learners in more than 200 countries. Closures of schools,
institutions and other learning spaces have impacted more than 94% of the world’s student
population. This has brought far-reaching changes in all aspects of our lives. Social distancing
and restrictive movement policies have significantly disturbed traditional educational practices.
Reopening of schools after relaxation of restriction is another challenge with many new
standard operating procedures put in place.
Within a short span of the COVID-19 pandemic, many researchers have shared their works on
teaching and learning in different ways. Several schools, colleges and universities have
discontinued face-to-face teachings. There is a fear of losing 2020 academic year or even more
in the coming future. The need of the hour is to innovate and implement alternative
educational system and assessment strategies. The COVID-19 pandemic has provided us with
an opportunity to pave the way for introducing digital learning. This article aims to provide a
comprehensive report on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on online teaching and
learning of various papers and indicate the way forward.

Effect of COVID-19 on the Performance of Grade 12 Students: Implications for STEM
Education
Edgar John Sintema
Abstract:
With all learning institutions pre-maturely closed on 20 March 2020 and all citizens advised to
self-isolate in a bid to control the spread of COVID-19, it was hypothesized that COVID-19 would
negatively impact on the performance of students in the 2020 Grade 12 national examinations
vis-à-vis mathematics, science and design and technology subjects. An observed steady increase
in the number of COVID-19 confirmed cases and the low levels of technology use in secondary
schools in Zambia due to limited technology resources signifies a very difficult period in a young
country which has just rolled out a nation-wide implementation of STEM education, This study
collected data from three teachers at a public secondary school in Chipata District of Eastern
Province in the Republic of Zambia. The Head of Department for Mathematics, the Head of
Natural Sciences Department and one science teacher were interviewed. Semi-structured
interviews via mobile phone were used to collect views of what these specialists thought would
be the COVID-19 effects on the general performance of students in their subject areas. Results
of this study revealed that there is likely to be a drop in the pass percentage of secondary
school students in this year’s national examinations if the COVID-19 epidemic is not contained
in the shortest possible time considering that the school academic calendar was abruptly
disturbed by the early untimely closure of all schools in the country.

Effects of COVID-19-Related School Closures on Student Achievement-A Systematic Review
Svenja Hammerstein, Christoph Konig, Thomas Dreisorner, Andreas Frey
Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic led to numerous governments deciding to close schools for several
weeks in spring 2020. Empirical evidence on the impact of COVID-19-related school closures on
academic achievement is only just emerging. The present work aimed to provide a first
systematic overview of evidence-based studies on general and differential effects of COVID-19-
related school closures in spring 2020 on student achievement in primary and secondary
education. Results indicate a negative effect of school closures on student achievement,
specifically in younger students and students from families with low socioeconomic status.
Moreover, certain measures can be identified that might mitigate these negative effects. The
findings are discussed in the context of their possible consequences for national educational
policies when facing future school closures.
