) A square column footing is to support a 400-mm square tied column that carries a dead
load of 880 kN and a live load of 710 kN. the column is reinforced, with 8-25 mm bars.
The base of the footing is 1.50 m below the natural grade where the allowable soil
pressure is 23 kPa. The soil above the footing has a weight of 15.6, kN/m^3. Assuming
fy = 275 MPa, fc = 27.5 MPa, and unit weight of concrete as 23.50 kN/m3, design the
footing. Use 25 min main bars.
a.) effective soil bearing capacity
b.) dimension of footing
c.) effective depth base on wide-beam shear
d.) effective depth base on punching shear
2.) A column 450 mm square with f’c = 27.65 MPa, reinforced with 8 -25 mm ⌀ bars with fy
= 345.58 MPa is supported by a footing with base 1.5 m below the grade. The allowable
bearing pressure is 240 KPa. Assume weight of soil and concrete to have an average unit
weight of 19.7 KN/m3. The total depth of the footing is 550 mm with an effective depth
of 475 mm and reinforced with 11 – 25 mm ⌀ bars in each direction. Use f’c = 20.7 MPa
and fy = 276 MPa for the footing.
a.) Determine the nearest value of the dimension of the footing.
b.) Determine the nearest value of the two way or punching shear.
c.) Determine the nearest value of the one way or beam shear.
3.) A column 450 mm x 450 mm square supports a dead load of 1000 KN and a live load of
780 KN. The allowable soil bearing pressure is 240 KPa. The base of the footing is 1.5 m.
below the grade. Assuming weight of concrete to be 24 KN/m3 and that of soil to be 18
KN/m3. The total depth of footing is 600 mm with a steel covering of 100 mm.
a.) Determine the effective soil pressure due to unfactored loads.
b.) Determine the dimension of the footing.
c.) Determine the nearest value of the bearing pressure for strength design of the footing
caused by the factored load.
4.) A square spread footing supports an interior 500 mm-square column supporting a service
dead load of 1800 kN and a service live load of 1250 kN. The column is built with 24.1
MPa concrete and it should use 20mm diameter longitudinal bars with fy = 415 MPa. The
depth of the foundation should not exceed at 2m and the preferred thickness of the
foundation should be at least 450mm. The top of the footing will be covered by soil with
unit weight of 18.8 kN/m^3 and a 150mm thick basement floor. The basement floor
loading is 4.8 kPa. The observed value of the ultimate soil bearing capacity was 870 kPA.
