AIM
Lighting up of the CFL
lamp using a tesla coil
MATERIALS REQUIRED
Resistors
Transistor
Copper wire
Connecting wire
Battery

Compact Fluorescent Lamp
LED Bulb (If Necessary)
THEORY
A Tesla coil comprises a
primary coil and secondary
coil, each coil with its own
capacitor to store electrical
energy. A spark gap links both
the coils and capacitors. The
system is powered by a high-
voltage source. As the current
flows out of the capacitor down
the primary coil, a magnetic
field is created
PRINCIPLE
Tesla coil is based on the
principle of electromagnetic
induction. As per this principle,
when a conductor is kept
under altering magnetic field,
there happens induction of
current in the conductor. In
the Tesla coil, this conductor is
termed a secondary coil and
the generation of altering
magnetic field is done by a
primary coil through passing
oscillating circuit through it.
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM
WORKING
The circuit operates in a rapid
repeating cycle in which the supply
transformer charges the capacitor
to a high voltage; which has low
reactance. When the voltage across
the capacitor reaches the breakdown
voltage of the spark gap , a spark
bridge is formed. As a result
spark gap resistance is reduced to
a very low value. This finishes the
primary circuit. So the current from
the capacitor flows through the
primary coil. The current flows
rapidly back and forth between the
plates of the capacitor through
coil generating radio frequency
oscillating current in the primary
circuit at the circuits resonant
frequency.
PROCEDURE
1) Wind the copper wire (secondary
coil) closely around the PVC pipe (or
a cylindrical non conducting object)
as close as possible, without
overlapping one another.
2) Attach a small ball wrapped in
Aluminium foil on the top end of the
pipe.
3) Stick the cylinder on a proper base
where the connections have to be
made.
4) Take a connecting wire (primary coil)
and wind it around the cylinder so
that both the ends of that wire is at
the base.
5) Connect the 27k resistor and lower
end of the copper wire to the base
terminal of the transistor.
6) Connect one end of the primary coil
to the collecting terminal of the
transistor.
7) Take a small piece of another
connecting wore and connect one
end to the resistor and the other to
the other end of the primary coil.
8) Take a battery snap and connect
the negative terminal (black) to the
emitter terminal of the transistor
9) Connect the positive terminal (red)
of the snap to a switch.
10)Take another small piece of wire
and connect one end to the switch
and the other to the transistor
11)Connect the 9V battery to the
battery snap.
12)Place a CFL lamp near the coil.
13) You can place a LED bulb in the
circuit to check whether the
current is flowing, if necessary
PRECAUTIONS
1) The Tesla Coil will be damaged if
the electrical circuit is not
grounded properly.
2) Verify that the main power switch
is in the off position before
connecting the power cord to
outlet.
3) Never allow anyone to come into
contact with any part of the Tesla
Coil besides the main power
switch while the Tesla Coil is
turned on
OBSERVATION
The CFL lamp brought near the
Tesla Coil gets lighten up due to
the transmission of electricity
through air.
APPLICATIONS
1)Tesla coils are used as leak
detectors in scientific high
vacuum systems.
2)Used to research diverse areas of
lightning, x-rays and electric
power transmission.
3)They are also used as
educational and entertaining
displays
