Waste Management

ENV 103: Environmental Science & Sustainability

Spring 2024
What is "Waste“?
▪ Waste: unwanted, useless, damaged, discarded, harmful
substances from human being.

▪ It may consist of the unwanted materials generated or discharged

from manufacturing process (industrial, commercial, mining or
agricultural operations,) or from community and household
activities.

▪ It has various physical form (solid – solid waste, liquid – effluent,

gaseous – emission)

▪ Waste appears in different sizes—some can be as small as an old

toothbrush, or as large as the school bus.

Sources of Waste

▪ Household/Domestic
▪ Agriculture
▪ Automobiles
▪ Industry
▪ Electronic waste
▪ Construction/Demolition related activities
Types of Waste
Solid Waste
▪ Waste material that are solid state cannot be easily passed through
a drainage passage
▪ Comprises a very wide range of materials that come from a
variety of sources
▪ 15% of it is plastic waste
Liquid Waste
▪ One that can be passed through drainage passage i.e. sewage or
watery mud
▪ Textile, Tannery, Human sewage are the main liquid or effluent
waste generator
▪ Industrial effluent contains many heavy metals( Pb, Cr, Hg, As,
Cd, Ni, PCBs) responsible for many human diseases
Hazardous Waste
▪ Hazardous or harmful waste are those that potentially threaten
public health or the environment
▪ Electronics and Small Appliances, Batteries, Light Bulbs, Paints,
Pest & Garden, Oil, Gasoline, Auto Fluids, Propane, Cleaners,
Nuclear waste
Organic / Biodegradable Waste

▪ Organic waste comes from plants or animals sources.

▪ Commonly, they include food waste
▪ They are biodegradable
▪ Organic waste could turn into compost for using in the
gardens.
Effects of Inefficient Waste Management
• Improper trashing and waste throwing habit could turn a country into a
garbage box.
• Open dumping of waste beside road side creating public nuisance and
bad odor in the locality.
• Toxic metals or chemicals can leach to mix with groundwater.
• Untreated hospital wastes containing pathogens may spread diseases in
the community.
• Biodegradable waste that is not recycled to compost is the main reason
of loss of soil fertility.
• Microplastic pollution is damaging soil, water and food chain due to
indiscriminate use of single used non-recycled plastic.
• Absence of ETP-Effluent Treatment plant in many textile and tannery
industries is leading to polluting water of the country.
3R in Waste management
▪ Concept of 3R:
– Reduce- Reduce food waste at home or restaurant
– Reuse- Reuse cloths i.e. handkerchief avoid use of tissue paper
— Recycle- Recycle food waste as compost or plastic waste

Reduce Reuse Recycled plastic

bag
SONALI BAG
Jute poly or Sonali Bag products made from jute is a great
solution of plastic pollution developed by Bangladesh
Government. This is biodegradable and does not harm
environment.

One metric ton plastic recycled at IUBAT each
year, 6 ton CO2 emission cut each year

Paper is also recycled at IUBAT
