SYNOPSIS

1.TITLE OF THE PROJECT:

Alcohol detection system using IoT.

2.INTRODUCTION

The increasing prevalence of alcohol consumption, particularly in social settings, has led to a
worrying trend: individuals choosing to drive while intoxicated. This behavior is not only a
serious legal offense but also poses a significant threat to public safety, resulting in
countless accidents and fatalities on the roads. In addition to the dangers posed by drunk
driving, women often face unique safety challenges in these scenarios, particularly when
traveling alone at night or in unfamiliar environments. Reports of harassment and unsafe
interactions with intoxicated individuals highlight the urgent need for effective solutions
that address both road safety and women’s safety.

In light of these pressing issues, our project aims to develop an innovative alcohol detection
system that leverages cutting-edge technology to mitigate the risks associated with alcohol
consumption and driving. At the core of this initiative is a highly sensitive alcohol sensor,
which functions as a breath analyzer to accurately detect the presence of alcohol particles in
the air. This device can be seamlessly integrated into vehicles or personal safety systems,
serving as a critical tool for ensuring responsible behavior and enhancing safety.

It aims to create an environment where individuals can feel secure and responsible,
particularly in scenarios where alcohol consumption is involved. Ultimately, reducing the
risks associated with drunk driving and personal safety.
3.PROBLEM STATEMENT
Alcohol consumption generally impairs the cognitive and motor functions leading to the
unconscious state of the humans. They are not in their senses and doesn’t know what’s
going on which can lead to many problems. Like driving vehicles in the unconscious state
which leads to accidents, misbehaving with women, etc. Alcoholism also includes the
harmful activities which can turn into violence. So for that, the methods can be blood test
and other tests. But detecting the alcohol presence at that particular time will be more easy.

4.SCOPE OF PROJECT

1.Objectives

The objective of the project is to develop a reliable and non invasive i.e. not involving the
introduction of instruments in the body. It is the detector which would give an accurate

result. Also, it ensures to give an immediate feedback.

2.Target users

It is for the general public and the employers like workers, drivers, etc.

3.Technology development

• It basically develops sensors for breath or sweat analysis.

• It develops algorithms for accurate detection.
• Also, an app will be there for real-time results and alerts.

4.Adherence to laws and regulations

Ensuring the product meets the local and international health and safety regulations.
5. Reduces crimes

It would also help in reducing more crimes like violence, misbehaviour, etc. and would
ensure safety.

5.TOOLS/ENVIRONMENT USED
Hardware Components

• Sensors

A gas sensor is required which is alcohol-specific like MQ-3 or MQ-7 which

is for detecting alcohol vapour in air.

• Microcontrollers
• Arduino- When the alcohol is detected in air, the Arduino then passes the data to
the computer which displays the data on the screen. The computer will then display
the data i.e. the concentration of alcohol.

• ESP8266/ESP32- It gives access to the wi-fi network and with the help of that,
displays the data.

• Power supply

Batteries will be used for the power supply which will be portable .

• Buzzer

On detecting the presence of alcohol the buzzer would make a sound which would

be more identifiable.

• LCD Display
LCD display which is liquid crystal display is the screen which will display the
concentration in numbers.

• DC Motor

When the alcohol is detected, the car siren starts buzzing and the engine will be

switched off, by this we can minimise the likelihood of any mishaps.

Software Components

• Programming languages:

C/C++- For programming microcontrollers.

Python- It will be used for the backend development, data analysis and machine
learning applications.

Java- It will used for developing mobile applications.

4.LIMITATIONS OF THE PROJECT

• The alcohol sensor will be costlier which will not be accessible to common
people.
• Sometimes, it may not work due to wi-fi connections.
• It is a sensitive device, which on falling can be damaged.
FUTURE SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

• GPS Integration- It will help in logging the location of the driver where the
alcohol is detected.
• Mobile App Integration- It would help in receiving real-time notifications, and
allow users to receive alerts.
• Advanced sensors- It will enhance Breathalyzer module.

5.RESULT AND FUTURE SCOPE

The system “Alcohol Detection and Engine Locking” system is beneficial for the society. It
would result in giving a better environment and would ensure the safety. The ‘drink and
drive’ cases that are increasing day by day would be reduced at a certain level. Most of the
accidents will be reduced.
